Hillbillies improve softball record to 5-0
FREDONIA — Marissa Cash was “money” in the circle for Fredonia on Friday afternoon.
The right-hander tossed a four-hitter, struck out six and didn’t issue a walk to highlight the Hillbillies 9-1 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West softball victory over Olean.
Cash was the beneficiary of a three-run first inning and six-run fourth to help Fredonia raise its record to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the division.
“This was, by far, our best game,” said Hillbillies’ coach Jesse Beers. “We pitched well, we had no errors and we grinded out at-bats. I challenged the girls before the game.”
Fredonia was up to the challenge.
Every starter had at least one hit, led by Nevaeh Zadzilka with three, and jayvee call-up Jaelyn Davis, Kyleigh Waterman (double) and Lila Cameron with two apiece.

BEARS HOLD ON
SALAMANCA — Frewsburg was able to hold off a late charge from Ellicottville in Friday’s consolation game of the Veteran’s Cup tournament, claiming a 7-5 win to improve to 2-2 on the year.
The Bears entered the final inning with a three-run cushion, which shrunk to two when the Eagles’ bats came to life, but Jonah San Angelo was able to get out of trouble on the hill.
San Angelo struck out five, giving up one earned run in three innings after Jackson Yost struck out eight and walked four through the opening four innings.
“It’s good to be back to baseball here, and I told the kids we’ll get better,” Ellicottville coach Chris Mendell said. “All of our errors were critical and they scored off of them. We spotted them three runs in the first, but after that Lucas Marsh settled in and threw a good game. He was efficient. We’ve got to hit better. We had 13 strikeouts. We’re not putting pressure on the defense.”
Marsh fanned eight with no walks and just two earned runs before giving way to Wyatt Chudy in relief. Marsh also helped his own cause with a triple.
Brett Kryniski had two hits and an RBI for Ellicottville.
Garrett Brink and Yost were both 3-for-4, including a double for the Bears, and teammate Traden Gray ripped a three-RBI triple.
