LAKEWOOD — Dustin Hendrix opened Monday’s season opener with a bang for Southwestern.
The sophomore ended Friday’s game with another.
Hendrix drove in Lucas Gilbert with the running run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Trojans beat Fredonia 4-3 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West action at Packard Field.
The victory was Southwestern’s second of the walk-off variety this week after the Trojans beat Olean in similar fashion Monday afternoon.
“I’m hoping at some point not every game is going to be like this,” head coach Jared Brown said postgame. “I do believe we have one of the toughest leagues in the area and all of Section VI. Every team is equal. Every game is going to be a grind.”

It was Brown’s first win over the Hillbillies. Fredonia hadn’t lost to Southwestern since 2011 — a span of 18 games.
“We had a little chip,” junior Aidan Kennedy said. “We always come up short when we’re playing them. It was a big game for us.”
“They’ve always been a thorn in our side,” Brown added.
The Hillbillies were actually in position to win Friday’s game after breaking a 2-2 tie with a run in the top of the seventh inning, but the Trojans did not go quietly.
Pinch-hitter Kenyon Davidson opened the bottom half of the inning with a single to left field before Gilbert came to the plate for his first at-bat. After fouling a sacrifice bunt off his foot on the first pitch and swinging through the second pitch, the sophomore relief pitcher drove a fly ball to right field that landed for a double and put runners at second and third with no outs.

Dom Gullo makes a thrown.
“Kenyon had come through already this week,” Brown said. “I knew if we got him on and moved the runner over, we’d give Nate (Johnson) and Kennedy a shot to knock him in.”
Johnson, Southwestern’s senior leadoff hitter, was then intentionally walked before Kennedy sliced a ball through the left side of the infield to plate pinch-runner Josh Truver with the tying run. Brown held Gilbert at third with no outs and the decision paid off one batter later when Hendrix picked up the winning hit.
“He’s stepping up and proving himself as a hitter,” Kennedy said of Hendrix. ” … Even thought he’s a sophomore, you have to respect him as a batter.”
It seems like when we’re put in these situations it’s down to Johnson, Kennedy or Hendrix,” Brown added. “That’s the reason they are in the Nos. 1-3 holes. They seem to be living up to the status of being at the top of the order.”
All four hits in the inning came with Trojans batters behind in the count, including the first two coming on 0-2 pitches.

“We talk about situational hitting a lot,” Brown said. ” … These guys are coming through at the right time, battling adversity. … There’s definitely no give-up in this baseball team.”
After Gilbert touched home with the winning run, Aidan Melquist mobbed Hendrix down the first-base line before the entire Trojans team joined in on the fun.
It was the third time this week that a Southwestern game ended on the final pitch, including Monday’s win over Olean and a Wednesday loss at Dunkirk.
Fredonia led 1-0 in the third inning Friday after Joey Vandette walked, stole second, went to third on a strikeout and scored on a wild pitch.
Matt Pannes led off the bottom of the third with a single, went to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on an infield single by Hendrix. Kennedy, who had been hit by a pitch, tried to score on the same play, but was thrown out at the plate.
The Hillbillies again took the lead in the top of the fourth when Simon Davis reached on a bunt single, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jayden Whitfield and scored on a passed ball.
Southwestern answered back as Calvin Ricker led off the bottom half of the frame with a single, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Melquist single.
The score remained 2-2 until the top of the seventh when Gabe Schrader worked a walk, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Helmer and scored on another wild pitch.
“We were fortunate with three wild pitches that we scored runs,” Fredonia head coach Vince Gullo said. “Every game is a grind.”
The Hillbillies’ one-run lead proved to not be enough.
“It’s sink or swim for everybody. I like baseball like this. It comes down to the little things,” Gullo said. “You have to do enough little things the right way to win the games; sure beats blowouts all the time.”
NOTES: Johnson, Walsh and Gilbert combined on a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts while walking six and hitting two batters. … Schrader threw 5 2/3 innings for Fredonia, allowing five hits, a walk and two hit batters while striking out five. … Kennedy had two hits, including a triple, while Hendrix also had two hits for the Trojans.
