CHAUTAUQUA — Georgia Military College squared off against Sandhills Community College a couple months ago in a dual match at the latter’s home course in North Carolina.

“They actually kicked our butt,” Bulldogs’ coach Charles Van Horn III said.

After two rounds of the NJCAA Division III Golf Championship on the Lake Course at Chautauqua Golf Club, Georgia Military finds itself in the driver’s seat — barely.

Dylan Humphries fired a 1-over 73, one of four Bulldogs to shoot in the 70s Wednesday afternoon to give them a two-day total of 603 and a one-shot lead over the Flyers in a battle between two of the strongest programs in the country.

“I think everybody is pretty much playing at the same pace,” said Van Horn III, who saw his team last win a title in 2019. “Right now it’s going to be a match against stamina. It is a four-round tournament. It is a long time to shoot that kind of number. The teams that are a little bit more in shape are going to be able to get to that number the next couple of days and, hopefully, we can improve a little bit here and there.”

Other scores for Georgia Military College were Peter Thayer 74, Austin Quillian 74 and Noah Hankins 79. Luner Benton’s 80 was thrown out.

Leading the way for Sandhills CC is Andreas Huber, whose second-round 73 gives him a two-day total of 144, two shots in front of Humphries in the battle for medalist honors. Nick Agapion fired a 74, Adam Hathaway a 75 and Carson Witherspoon a 78. Andrew Crawford’s 83 was tossed out.

Minnesota State Technical and Community College, paced by Wyatt Blomseth’s 76, finds itself in the third place with a two-day total of 613. Dupage CC is fourth at 642, followed by Niagara County CC at 654, Delta CC at 691, Jefferson CC at 692 and Jamestown CC at 745.

Individually, the top 10 include Huber (71-73-144), Humphries (73-73-146), Blomseth (73-76-149, Peter Thayer of Georgia Military College (75-74-149), Agapion (76-74-150), Quillian (76-74-150), Sam Hyman of Niagara County CC (76-76-152), Grant Inniger of Minnesota State Technical and Community College (74-79-153), Carter Justesen of Minnesota State Technical and Community College (75-79-154) and Hathaway (79-75-154).

Anthony Gullo led host Jamestown CC with a second-round 82, giving him a two-day toal of 19-over-par 163, good for 20th place.

“Again, he wasn’t in position off the tee to be able to score,” Jayhawks coach and tournament director George Sisson said. “When you don’t get off the tee and get in positions that you want to be in, a stroke here and a stroke there starts adding up very quickly on this course.”

Teammate David Allen is at 90-85-175 for 36th place, while teammates Josh Brown (104-99-203) and Matt Fennell (107-97) are 44th and 45th respectively.

“You know what, there are still 36 holes,” Sisson said. “Lots of things can happen in 36 holes. It looks like it is still a horse race, though.”
