Locals ace final exam

Madariaga goes out on top in 400 and 200

OBSERVER Photo by Tim Frank Fredonia’s Oliver Madariaga runs the 400 meters during Wednesday’s Section VI Division II track and field championships at Falconer’s Bill Race Field.

FALCONER — Toward the end of the Section VI Division 2 Track & Field Championships, the public-address announcer encouraged all senior athletes to stick around to take a ceremonial last-lap around the all-weather surface.

The 12th-graders representing the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association could make a very strong case that they should be at or near the head of the pack.

Southwestern’s Cassidy Allen won three individual events, including clearing another record-breaking height in the pole vault; sister Kayla won the girls pentathlon; Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s John Swabik claimed the boys pentathlon; and Fredonia’s Oliver Madariaga won two individual events and was a member of the victorious 4×400-meter relay to highlight a gorgeous Wednesday at Bill Race Field.

Toss in another first-place finish by Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Devin Austin in the triple jump, and top-three placements by a host of others, and it proved to be quite a late afternoon and early evening for the teenagers from the CCAA.

Cassidy Allen, who will join her sister at the University of Akron in the fall, broke her own New York State Division 2 record in the pole vault (13 feet, 7 inches); won the triple jump (38-4) while setting a school record in the process; and won the 200 meters (25.47).

Submitted Photo Fredonia’s Alex Field, Ledreth Velez-Olmo, Matt Linder and Oliver Madariaga won the 1,600-meter relay Wednesday.

Kayla Allen parlayed personal bests in the long jump (4.78 meters) and 800 meters (2:36.84) into 2,667 total points in the pentathlon; Swabik — arguably the CCAA’s finest all-around athlete — ran, jumped and threw his way to a personal best 3,527-point total in his final scholastic competition before he heads to the University of Colorado in a couple of months; and the SUNY Binghamton-bound Madariaga ran a 50.02 to break a 30-year-old school record in the 400 meters; captured the 200 (22.53); and anchored the victorious 1,600 relay that also included Alex Field, Ledreth Velez-Olmo and Matt Linder in 3:29.76.

“The 400 is (Madariaga’s) event,” Fredonia coach Bob Ball said, “and that’s where he has always run. We ended up putting him in the 100, and he took off there and broke a 51-year school record earlier in the year. He also anchors our relay that just continued to get better, ending up 11 seconds faster from three weeks ago. We knew what we had (in Madariaga), it was just a matter of the other three.”

The area second-place finishers were Jordan Svetz, Clymer/Sherman/Panama, pentathlon (2,932 points); the Maple Grove girls 4×800 relay team of Christina Peppy, Tori Pavlock, Abby Brunenavs and Ava Crist (10:00.05); the Southwestern boys 4×800-meter relay team of Carter McKotch, Ethan Luce, Nate Lewis and Trenton Shutters (8:22.53); Jenna Fisher, C/S/P, 100 meters (12.77); Miracle Berakah, Southwestern, 400 meters (51.12); Shutters, Southwestern, 800 meters (2:00.81); Roan Kelly, Randolph, 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:22.63); Alina Beadle, Silver Creek, shot put (33-8.75); and Tessa Mozzi, Maple Grove, discus (97-8).

The area third-place finishers were Amelia Brown, Chautauqua Lake, 400-meter hurdles (1:11.20); Juliana Flick, Silver Creek, 800 meters (2:27.46); Sydney Smith, Randolph, 2,000 steeplechase (8:10.89); the Southwestern 4×400-meter relay team of Berakah, Luce, McKotch and Shutters (3:32.44); Jaiden Huntington, Randolph, discus (121-0); Jillian Rea, Salamanca, shot put (32-5.25); Sam Emiller, Maple Grove, high jump (5-9); and Dontae Hoose, Southwestern, shot put (43-9.5).

The large crowd watching from the bleachers took notice. So, too, did the competitors.

As Swabik was competing in the high jump portion of the pentathlon, two Portville athletes sat on the turf nearby. Upon Swabik clearing the bar set at more than 6 feet, one of them said, “I thought I had hops,” and, when Swabik walked by moments later, one of his peers looked at him and said, “You’re crazy.”

Swabik stopped, smiled and said, “Thanks.”

It was only fitting that on graduation week, the CCAA’s finest aced their final “exam.”
