Madariaga sets Fredonia record

Senior breaks 51-year-old mark with 10.9 100-meter dash

OBSERVER File Photo Fredonia’s Oliver Madariaga, center, broke a 51-year-old school record Monday evening.

Oliver Madariaga has found the Fredonia record board.

And he may not be done yet.

The Hillbillies’ senior set the program record in the 100-meter dash Monday, but Southwestern beat Fredonia 95-45 in a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 meet.

Madariaga finished in 10.9 seconds, which converts to a 9.97 100-yard dash. The previous Fredonia record of 10.1 seconds in the 100-yard dash was set by Greg Follett in 1970.

Madariaga also won the 200 meters in 22.6 seconds and the 400 meters in 51.1 seconds. At last Friday’s CCAA Division 1 league meet, Madariaga was just off the converted school record times in those two events.

Rick St. George (1972) and Matt Decelio (1976) both ran 22.5s in the 200-yard dash. Madariaga’s best of 22.5 in the 200 meters converts to a 22.73 in the 200-yard dash.

James Krupinski ran a 50.06 in the 400 yards in 1991. Madariaga’s time at Friday’s league meet in the 400 meters converts to a 50.09 in yards.

Madariaga will have two more chances to set the school marks. He will run in the Section VI Class B meet Thursday night in Falconer and the Section VI Division II meet next Wednesday in Falconer.
