Wolfe captures Wednesday Travel League’s third major

BUSTI — Mike Wolfe shot a 79 to claim the New York Open at South Hills Country Club.

The New York Open is the Wednesday Travel League’s third major of the season.

Dave Wallace was second with 80 while Ed Tofil, Al Etzel, and Jeff Kubera tied for third with 81s.

Kubera led the front nine with a 37, including the league’s first eagle of the season, on the par-5 eighth hole. Tofil led the back nine with an even-par 36.

In the B Flight, Ken Kaus was the winner on a tiebreaker with John Waterman. In the C Flight, Joe Bifaro was the winner on a tiebreaker with Dan Kubera. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Brian Lore.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Wolfe (Nos. 3, 7), Pat Weaver (No. 4), Wallace (Nos. 6, 12, 13), Kubera (No. 8, eagle), Tofil (Nos. 14, 17) and Etzel (No. 15); B Flight — Bob North (No. 10), Pete Gawron (No. 16) and Tom Destro (No. 18); C Flight — Bill Aldrich (No. 2), Tony Destro (No. 6) and Tim Walawender (No. 12).

Closest to the pin were Weaver (No. 4), Jeff Kubera (No. 9), Robert Calph (No. 13) and Etzel (No. 15). Winners of the par-3 contest were: A Flight — Wolfe and Gary Haase (+1), B Flight — Waterman (+2) and C Flight — Dan Kubera (+3).

Top point winners were Wallace (61), Etzel and Weaver (47 apiece) and Jeff Kubera (46). Season points leaders: 1. Wayne Stoughton (299), 2. Wolfe (263), 3. Tofil (257), 4. Etzel (249), 5. Dennis Gawronski Sr. (216), 6. Mick Dunning Sr. (190), 7. Wallace (178), 8. Dave Criscione (164), 9. Pete Pinkoski and Waterman (157 apiece).

This week the league plays “The Ridge”, formerly known as “Crab Apple Ridge”, in Erie, Pennsylvania. The first tee time is at 9:20 a.m. Golfers need to be signed up by 8 p.m. Sunday at 785-2291.
