Fredonia, Dunkirk make NYSSWA rankings

Clymer/Sherman/Panama retained its No. 1 spot in Class D football as the New York State Sportswriters Association released its second rankings Tuesday.

The Wolfpack (3-0, 2-0 Class D) beat Portville, 34-8, on Friday night as Micah Willink and Trent Burchanowski each had a pair of touchdowns in the victory. That loss dropped the Panthers to 2-1 on the season and No. 15 in the Class D rankings.

Jamestown (3-0, 2-0 Class A South) maintained its No. 2 spot in the Class A rankings thanks to a 20-14 win over Frontier on Friday night at Strider Field. Jaylen Butera continued his blistering-hot start for the Red Raiders with 135 yards rushing, 123 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Jamestown travels to West Seneca West (1-2, 1-2) this Friday night.

Xander Hind continued to carry the load offensively for the Cardinals with 229 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries, but fullback Luke Pagett also joined in on the fun with 17 carries for 138 yards and three touchdowns.

Both the Wolfpack and Cardinals will put their unblemished records on the line this Saturday when they play for first place in the league at Jack Keeney Community Field in Panama at 12:30 p.m. The teams met in a nonleague game this past spring and C/S/P won, 25-6, when the Wolfpack were a Class C program.

Fredonia (2-0, 1-0 Class C South) sits at No. 10 in Class C after not playing a game this past weekend. The Hillbillies’ scheduled contest against Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton was postponed until Tuesday, Oct. 12 due to COVID-19 concerns in the Thunderbirds’ program. Fredonia is scheduled to return to action Friday against Gowanda/Pine Valley at the Orange Bowl.

Franklinville/Ellicottville moved up a spot to No. 9 in Class D after beating Silver Creek/Forestville, 40-13, last Friday night. Dunkirk (1-1, 1-1 Class B South) is an honorable-mention selection Class B, despite losing to Iroquois, 51-14, on Friday. The Marauders will have to wait awhile to improve their record because they were put on a COVID-19 quarantine starting last Friday that will last through Monday.

Southwestern (1-2, 0-1 Class C South) remained an honorable-mention selection in Class C after picking up its first win of the season last Friday against nonleague Olean at Charles A. Lawson Field. The Trojans will look to pick up their first league victory of the season Friday night when they welcome Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton back from its COVID-19 quarantine.

In 8-man football, Frewsburg is listed as an honorable-mention selection after starting its season with a pair of impressive victories. The Bears were unable to find a game this past weekend after South Seneca postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. This weekend was already a scheduled bye week for Frewsburg, so as of now the Bears don’t play again until Friday, Oct. 1 at Canisteo/Greenwood.
