Poor fourth quarter sends JCC women to loss
In a rematch against WVU Potomac State College on Sunday afternoon at The Post-Journal Classic, the Jamestown Community College women’s basketball team lost 71-51.
The Jayhawks (6-5) were led by guard D’Auzhanay Harden (Erie, Pennsylvania/Erie High), who recorded her first collegiate double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds with guard Destiny Evans (Peoria, Illinois/Lorain High) scoring a team-high 14 points. Guard Jessica Beehler (Dunkirk/Dunkirk High) chipped in with 13 points, and Hannah Hicks (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights High) had another strong effort, grabbing 11 rebounds and rejecting seven shots.
Jamestown CC found itself down 41-27 at the break and with some halftime adjustments, the Jayhawks came out in the third quarter ready to play.
In a four-minute span, the Jayhawks went on a 15-2 run to cut the deficit to five with two minutes left in the quarter. Beehler played a pivotal role in the spurt, contributing 10 points including a pair of 3-pointers.
The Catamounts put together a strong fourth quarter to put away the game, outscoring Jamestown CC 19-4.
The Jayhawks went 20 for 67 (29.9%) from the field with WVU Potomac State going 22 for 58 (37.9%) from the floor.
The teams were close on the boards with Jamestown CC having a slight 47-45 edge. The Jayhawks did take advantage of their extra opportunities on offense, scoring 12 second-chance points.
The Jayhawks will be back in action tonight as they host Corning Community College at the Olean Campus with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

In a rematch against WVU Potomac State College on Sunday afternoon at The Post-Journal Classic, the Jamestown Community College men’s basketball team fell 83-70 at the Physical Education Complex.
The Jayhawks (1-9) were led by guard Clinique Jackson (Rochester/East High) with a career-high 24 points and nine rebounds with guard Jafar Yahuza (Staten Island/Port Richmond High) adding 20 points. Forward Traden Gray (Frewsburg,/Frewsburg Central) chipped in with 12 points.
It was a chess match for the first 14 minutes, with both teams at a standstill scoring 25 points each. The Catamounts were able to slowly build a lead, going up 33-25 with just over two minutes until the break. Yahuza halted the run, knocking down a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game. Potomac State scored a bucket late to take a 35-27 lead into halftime.
Trailing by as many as 12 in the second half, the Jayhawks slowly chipped away at the deficit. Yahuza made it a two-possession game with a 3-pointer with under 12 minutes in regulation to make it 49-43.
The Catamounts slowly took the game back over, gaining a lead of 18 points to help get the win.
The Jayhawks went 26 of 66 (39.4%) from the floor with the Catamounts going 31 of 58 (53.4%) from the field. Potomac State held the rebounding advantage, grabbing 40 boards to Jamestown CC’s 33.
The Jayhawks will be back in action at 7:30 tonight as they host Corning CC at the Olean campus.
