JCC women fall in region opener at Niagara County
SANBORN — In their opening game of NJCAA Region 3 Division II play, the Jamestown Community College women’s basketball team fell to Niagara County CC 91-59 on Wednesday.
The Jayhawks (9-10, 0-1 Region 3) were led by forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) with 17 points, nine boards, and four assists while guard Sydney Burk (Jamestown, NY/Southwestern High) adding 13 points and nine rebounds. Guard Jessica Beehler (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) orchestrated the offense, finishing with 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
JCC took the fight to the Thunderwolves, after falling behind 5-2, they rallied back and scored nine unanswered thanks to a pair of buckets from Beehler and a three-pointer from guard Kymi Nance (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS). NCCC did fight back but the Jayhawks held on to take a 16-13 advantage after the first frame.
Burk kept the momentum going in the second quarter, knocking down a 3-pointer off the feed from Nance to make it 19-16. JCC maintained a lead for a majority of the quarter before Niagara County CC made a layup in the closing seconds to take a 30-28 lead at the break.
The Thunderwolves came out of the break and took over the game, outscoring the Jayhawks 34-13 in the third period which helped them take the first of three games between the teams this season.
JCC went 25-for-60 (41.7%) from the field while Niagara County CC went 37-for-84 (44%) from the floor. The Thunderwolves held the slight advantage on the boards, grabbing 44 rebounds to the Jayhawks’ 42 rebounds.
