Maple Grove eases past Cougars

BEMUS POINT — The Maple Grove Red Dragons defeated the Cassadaga Valley Cougars 46-19 for a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Central Division girls basketball victory on Friday.

The Red Dragons (6-6, 2-1) dominated the game from the start, outscoring the Cougars 17-1 in the opening quarter. Maple Grove held Cassadaga Valley (3-6, 0-3) to single digits in every quarter of the game on the way to a 46-19 victory.

Maple Grove’s top scorer was Madison Price with 12 points; Sam Snow added 10 points and seven rebounds; and Erin Mansfield had 9 points and six steals.

Cassadaga Valley’s top scorer was Andrea Johnson with 8 points.

TROJANS TOP ‘BILLIES

The Southwestern Trojans defeated the Fredonia Hillbillies 66-29 for a Division 1 West victory.

The Trojans (6-4, 4-0) were all of the Hillbillies (4-9, 0-4) from the start, jumping out to a 17-9 lead after the first quarter. By the end of the first half the Trojans scored more than the Hillbillies would all game and they cruised to a 66-29 victory.

Southwestern was led by Reece Beaver scoring 26 points and Ellie Lawton added 12 points.

Fredonia’s effort was championed by Ashlynn Delcamp with 6 points and eight rebounds, and Francesca Pucci had five assists and three steals.

SHERMAN UPENDS CLYMER

SHERMAN — The Sherman Wildcats stepped up in the second half to defeat the Clymer Pirates 45-36 in Division 2 West action.

The Wildcats (5-5, 2-1) held a 16-14 lead over the visiting Pirates at halftime. Sherman picked it up in the second half and that was started by Kaitlyn Lindsey who scored all 10 of her points in the second half and Jenna Fisher scored 6 of her 10 points in the third quarter. Fisher also racked up six steals and six assists, while Leighanne Swan grabbed seven rebounds.

Mikala Einink led the Pirates (10-2, 3-1) with 11 points and three steals, while Karlen Honey added 10 points and six rebounds and Aurora Ordines grabbed four rebounds and dished two assists.

Away from the scoreboard the two communities came together for a family in need after tragedy struck.

“Both communities came out to support a family who lost their house and son in a fire,” stated Sherman head coach Emily Eckwahl. “It was a really great turnout and supported their efforts to be small town strong. It’s nice to see two rival teams come together for the greater good.”

ELLICOTTVILLE WINS

NORTH COLLINS — The Ellicottville Eagles defeated North Collins 49-27 for a East Division win.

Ellicottville (8-4, 6-0) jumped out to a big league in the first half, scoring 35 points to North Collins’ 6 points. Ellicottville slowed down in the second half as it cruised to another league victory.

North Collins (4-5, 2-4) had a big 3rd quarter, scoring 15 points, but that was not nearly enough as it lost 49-27.

BRINK, ODELL SHINE

PANAMA — Behind Mandy Brink’s fine all-around game, Panama posted a 59-25 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West victory over Westfield/Brocton.

Brink scored 25 points to go along with six rebounds, six steals and four assists, and Lilly Odell drilled six 3-pointers on her way to 18 points. She also had three assists. Also contributing to the winning effort were Jo Bailey with 10 rebounds and Kaitlyn Horton with eight.

The game was tied 12-all after the first quarter, but the Panthers (7-4, 3-1) outscored the Wolverines 37-6 in the middle two periods.

Tanleigh Bestine led Westfield/Brocton (3-6, 0-2) with 8 points.
