Thunderbirds take first place on the mats

FALCONER — The Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama Thunderbirds took first place at the 2022 Patrick J. Morales Tournament this past weekend after scoring 196.50 points. Slotting behind the Thunderbirds was Corry High School with 173.50 points and in third was Falconer/Cassadaga Valley with 155 points.

The Thunderbirds had two individual first place finishes from Jodan Joslyn and Trent Burchanowski. At 118-pounds Joslyn scored a 12-1 major decision against Pioneer’s Daniel Kirsch and at 132-pounds Burchanowski defeated Thunderbirds teammate Jack Bourgeois in a 4-0 decision.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama had two more wrestlers finish as runner-up with Ison Shirley losing to Eisenhower’s Cael Black by pinfall at 215-pounds and Gavin Segovia was pinned by Kane’s Shawn Nystrom at 285-pounds.

Luke Ely joined Kane teammate Nystrom atop the podium after defeating Springville’s Nick Brown in the 160-pound final by a 5-0 decision.

Host team Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s top finishers were Kyle Keefe and Dylan Newman. Keefe took second place at 172-pounds thanks to an 11-6 decision to Mason Savitz of Corry, and Newman was pinned by Southwestern’s Carmine Calimeri at 102-pounds. Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Karsen DePasquale finished the weekend on a win by defeating Corry’s Damion Kinney in a 5-4 decision at 132-pounds.

Maple Grove’s Luke Tomlinson took first place at 145-pounds with a pin against Kane’s Reece Bechakas. Matt Trim just came up short of another win for the Red Dragons after losing a 3-2 decision Corry’s Ethyn Allen at 189-pounds.

Southwestern’s top finisher was Calimeri in first place at 102-pounds. Calimeri was joined on the podium by Trojans’ teammates Tavio Hoose taking third place at 172-pounds by 6-3 decision and Dontae Hoose taking third at 215-pounds by pinfall.

Jamestown’s Aiden Senear was the Red Raiders top finisher, falling to St. Joe’s Austin Zimmerman at 110-pounds by a 12-0 major decision. Caleb Bane also reached the podium for the Red Raiders with a 4-0 decision over Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s David Stein at 285-pounds.

Caden Inkley reached the podium for Randolph with third place victory by securing a pin against Iroquois’ Peter Gaglio at 118-pounds.
