Jamestown’s boys and Randolph’s girls are two of five local teams to earn No. 1 seeds for the upcoming Section VI basketball playoffs.
Their reward?
Nearly two weeks off between their last regular-season game and their first playoff game.
The Red Raiders, No. 1 in Class AA boys which features just seven teams, last played Thursday when they beat Erie (Pa.) High. Head coach Ben Drake’s team will not return to action until Wednesday, March 2 when they take on the winner of No. 5 Lancaster and No. 4 Clarence at 5:15 p.m. at Buffalo State College.
In Class C girls, Randolph is the No. 1 seed in a seven-team Class C2.

The Cardinals beat Southwestern on Thursday night to clinch a share of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West crown. Now, they won’t play again until an 8 p.m. semifinal game on Wednesday, March 2 at Jamestown Community College against the winner of No. 5 Maple Grove and No. 4 Chautauqua Lake.
Randolph’s boys earned the No. 1 seed in Class C and will host a quarterfinal game Friday, Feb. 25. No. 16 Falconer will travel to No. 9 Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Tuesday and the winner will play at No. 8 Global Concepts on Wednesday. Whichever team survives will play at Randolph.
Westfield’s boys are the No. 1 seed in Class D and will host No. 8 Franklinville in a quarterfinal on Friday. Other quarterfinals that night will be No. 5 Pine Valley at No. 4 Ellicottville, No. 6 North Collins at No. 3 Sherman and No. 7 Panama at No. 2 Clymer.
Ellicottville’s girls are the No. 1 seed in Class D and will not play again until a 5 p.m. semifinal at Jamestown Community College on Wednesday, March 2. The Eagles await the Thursday’s quarterfinal winner of No. 5 Franklinville and No. 4 Pine Valley. Other girls quarterfinals are No. 7 North Collins at No. 2 Panama and No. 6 Clymer at No. 3 Sherman.
Jamestown’s girls are the No. 4 seed in Class AA and will host No. 5 Orchard Park on Thursday.
In boys Class B1, No. 15 Dunkirk will take on No. 10 Burgard at MST Prep on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
In Class B2 boys, No. 10 Fredonia will travel to No. 7 Cleveland Hill for a 7 p.m. prequarterfinal Wednesday while No. 8 Southwestern will host No. 9 Medina at the same time that night.
In Class B2 girls, No. 11 Fredonia will visit No. 6 Alden at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Other Class C boys qualifiers Tuesday include No. 13 Chautauqua Lake at No. 12 MST Prep, No. 14 Gowanda at No. 11 Maple Grove and No. 15 Cassadaga Valley at No. 10 Barker.
In the Class C boys prequarterfinals, No. 6 Silver Creek will host the Gowanda/Maple Grove winner on Wednesday.
No. 4 Salamanca will host Chautauqua Lake, MST Prep or Portville and No. 3 Frewsburg will host Gowanda, Maple Grove or Silver Creek in Class C boys quarterfinals Friday.
In Class C1 girls quarterfinals Thursday, No. 4 Falconer will host No. 5 Salamanca, No. 2 Portville will host No. 7 Gowanda and No. 3 MST Prep will host No. 6 Silver Creek.
In Class C2 girls quarterfinals Thursday, No. 7 Cassadaga Valley will travel to No. 2 Holland and No. 3 Frewsburg will host No. 6 Westfield/Brocton.
Next week’s Jamestown Community College schedule will feature Class C boys semifinals Monday and Class D boys semifinals Tuesday. Wednesday will feature Class C2 girls semifinals and a Class D girls semifinal before Class C1 girls semifinals and another Class D girls semifinal Thursday. Friday evening will feature the Class C and Class D boys finals. On Saturday, the Class C1, Class C2 and Class D girls finals will take place.
Boys tops seeds, other than Jamestown, Randolph and Westfield are: Niagara Wheatfield (Class A1), Amherst (Class A2), Lackawanna (Class B1) and Royalton-Hartland (Class B2).
Girls top seeds other than Randolph and Ellicottville are: Lancaster (Class AA), Sweet Home (Class A1), Iroquois (Class A2), Lewiston-Porter (Class B1), Eden (Class B2) and Wilson (Class C1).
