Changing temps make outdoor activities difficult

These seesaw temperatures make outdoor activities seem like a cutline from a Jaws movie.

“Just when you think it’s okay to go out on the water?”

Zach my contact at Hogan’s Hut commented, that since last week, the fishing productivity has slowed way down. There is still some panfish catching at Mayville, with runt sized fish continuing to be the norm and most of the walleye activity has been coming from the deeper pools.

Just a reminder that walleye season statewide closes on March 15 and won’t re-open until the first Saturday in May, which is May 7 this year. Anglers have to settle for a couple fish compared to near limits.

With warmer temperatures and sunny days it won’t be too long before anglers start focusing on bays and in-lets for crappie, on in-land lakes. In the meantime trout fishing should be ready to jump-start again with the next Spring thaw.

Rick Miller in Irving reports during the last thaw anglers found a lot of active fresh run fish where Walnut and Silver Creek converge. Canadaway Creek showed signs of opening up as late as Friday morning, too. The wind direction has pushed a lot of off shore ice in along the shore line locally. There was a report of one angler trying his luck upon the ice where the ARGO is usually parked. He did manage to land a nice 5-pound rainbow. A goodly amount of anglers have been heading to Prendergast Erie to try their luck on the ice. Another local angler reported having to move to three different spots before they could find safe ice but his buddy “Coach” managed to land a 42 ¢ inch muskie on 5 lb. Test line. What a thrill that must have been.

Captain Larry Jones reports that the trout fishing and catching has been great on the Lower Niagara River lately. Most boaters have been reporting 4 to 5 fish per outing. The hot bait continues to be brown trout eggs with green mesh or green beads.

Last year the offshore yellow perch action started sooner and a lot closer to home than usual. The same could happen again this year. So get your boat and tackle ready to get out of the launch fast.
