Jayhawks perform well on 3rd day of nationals

FORT PIERCE, Fla — Another day, another record falls for the Jamestown Community College swim team.

The Jayhawks took to the pool for the third day of the NJCAA National Championships and both the men and women continued to rewrite the school record books.

Matt Fennell (Fourways Garden, Johannesburg, South Africa/King Edwards VII School) set a new school record in the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:03.29.

The boys also finished in seventh for the 200 medley relay and currently sit in 9th place overall. The Jayhawks have 94 points and trail Monroe Community College with 103 points and Genesee Community College with 102 points.

The women had several Honorable Mention All-Americans once again, with Tia Moppert (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda HS), Shannen Stein (Olean, NY/Portville Central), Jade Vidas (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Parktown HS for Girls), Kaylee Constantino (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg HS) and Jenna Fiebiger (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Fourways HS).

Moppert finished 11th in the 100 IM; Stein took 9th in the 100 backstroke and Vidas took 10th; Constantino finished 9th in the 100 breaststroke; and Fiebiger placed 11th in the 200 butterfly by improving her prelim time of 2:58 to 2:51 in the finals.

Lindsay Finch (Russell, PA/Eisenhower HS) had a huge improvement in the 500 freestyle, going from 6:27 in the prelims to 5:59 in the finals for a 14th place finish.

“She has been having a fantastic meet,” Jayhawks head coach Todd Conklin said about Finch. “She gets to swim the mile today and we’re expecting another huge drop in time from her.”

The team of Stein, Constantino, Vidas and Moppert also took 5th place in the 200 medley relay.

The women’s team sits in 5th place overall and is 30 points ahead of Genesee Community College for the junior national title.

“There were some great performances overall with one hiccup from a false start,” Conklin stated about the women’s team. “Tomorrow is the final day. Really looking to wrap this thing up, we have one full day to close it out and become national champs again.”
