JCC baseball splits weekend games
ST. BONAVENTURE — To close out their series against Genesee Community College, the Jamestown Community College baseball team traveled an hour east to play its games at Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field on the campus of St. Bonaventure University.
It was a tale of two games Saturday afternoon with the Jayhawks (4-7, 3-3 Region 3 West) struggling to find a hit in the first game against the Cougars, a 13-0 loss. Third baseman Tanner Potter (Trumansburg/Trumansburg) did have success reaching base though, drawing two walks. First baseman Yordangel Gonzalez (Miami/Miami Jackson) and right fielder Billy Harmon (Racone, Ohio/Southern Local) also reached base by drawing walks.
Pitcher Riley Piazza (Jamestown/Jamestown) earned the loss on the mound, giving up nine runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings of action. Alex Kemery (Youngsville, Pennsylvania/Youngsville) saw the next one and 2/3 innings of action, surrendering four runs on two hits and striking out one. Walt Rybczynski (Hamburg/St. Francis) closed out the last inning of action.
The Jayhawks flipped the switch in the second game, a 9-4 win, coming out aggressive as leadoff man Nate Johnson (Lakewood/Southwestern) hit a double to get things going. After advancing over to third, Johnson stole home to give Jamestown CC the 1-0 lead after one inning.
After three innings of scoreless play, Gonzalez faced a 2-2 count with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and hit a triple to deep center field. The flood gates opened as the Jayhawks scored seven runs in the frame. Lucas Porpiglia (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) highlighted the scoring, hitting a three-run triple to right field to cap off the scoring.
JCC tacked on one more run in the sixth as Johnson hit his second double of the day and was brought home by an RBI groundout by second baseman Zach Zulawski (Melbourne, Florida/Viera).
The Cougars did make it interesting in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs.
Harmon got the win on the mound, pitching six innings while fanning five hits, two runs and striking out five batters. Johnson closed the game out, striking out a pair of batters.
The Jayhawks will be back in action today as they travel to Tompkins Cortland CC to close out their series. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
