Owen Ludwig was near perfect on Monday for the Fredonia Hillbillies (7-2-1, 6-1).
Ludwig pitched a no-hitter in Fredonia's 10-0 win over Jamestown in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball action. Ludwig went all five innings, struck out 10 batters with just one player reaching base on an error.
"Owen was in full command from the start," said Fredonia head coach Tim Cowan. "He only had one full count and that resulted in a strikeout. He was in full command of all his 57 pitches. He struck out four with his fastball, four with the slider and two on his curveball."
Ludwig's no-hit bid was almost lost in the top of the fourth, but Gabe Schrader saved the day by diving for a grounder up the middle and making the play at first base.
Fredonia took the lead in the second when Nathan Sercu drove in Matt Cash and Trevor Persch. Persch added to the lead in the third by driving in Schrader.
It wasn't until the fifth inning when the Hillbillies offense really popped, scoring seven runs to walk off on the mercy rule. Micah Davis had the first RBI, Cash then had a two-run double, Andrew Cowan and Simon Davis knocked in runs via walk and hit by pitch, and Owen Rush ended the game with a two-out single just inside the left field line that drove in the final two runs.
The pitcher for Jamestown (3-5, 2-4) was Colin Melendez for 4 1/3 innings and he struck out five.
