Hitting Stride

Fredonia posts convincing softball victory over Dunkirk

By OBSERVER Staff Reports 3 min read

A little more than two weeks ago, Fredonia had all it could do to knock off rival Dunkirk in a Division 1 West softball game.

It was a different story Friday.

The Hillbillies collected 14 hits and Jordan Lucas allowed just two in the circle en route to a 15-0 victory to raise their record to 12-1 overall and 11-1 in the division.

"This is the first day where we've played a complete game," Fredonia coach Jesse Beers said. "I think we are hitting our stride at the right time."

The Hillbillies wasted little time in getting a lead as they scored six runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a double from Gaby Matos and a two-run single by Hallie Laurito, and never looked back.

It was a far cry from their 6-4 win on April 28.

"Fredonia came to play," Marauders coach Tonia Piede said. "Not that we didn't, but Fredonia was really ready for us this time."

Jenna Truby (double) smacked three hits; Matos had the double and two-run home run; Lucas helped her own cause with a pair of two-baggers; and Lila Cameron (double) collected a pair of hits for the Hillbillies.

Emily Pacheco had a double and Gracey Kenner added a single for Dunkirk (5-9, 5-7). Jamaladie Pacheco was the losing pitcher.

Fredonia will be back in action today with a nonleague home doubleheader against Westfield. The first pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.

The Marauders will travel to Gowanda for an 8 p.m. game Monday.

WESTFIELD DOWNS PANAMA

PANAMA -- Haleigh Dellow tossed a one-hitter and struck out 16 as Westfield held off pesky Panama 4-0 in a Division 2 West game.

The Wolverines (15-1, 10-1) scored two runs in both the first and second innings, which was just enough to down the Panthers (3-9, 3-8).

Westfield managed three hits off the combined pitching efforts of Panama's Emma Cooper and Jessica Lyon. Dellow and Mackenzie Schumaker both had a double and Madyson Burgess added a single.

Mandy Brink had the Panthers' lone hit, a third-inning double.

HORNETS WIN AGAIN

FORESTVILLE -- Forestville jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and held on for a 7-6 Division 1 East victory over Brocton.

Megan Gruber was the winning pitcher, scattering seven hits, striking out 12 and not issuing a walk for the winners, who claimed their second straight win. Trinity Scinta helped jump-start the Hornets' offense with a two-out, first-inning single.

Angeline Rexford (double) had two hits and Julia Miller also had a double for the Bulldogs (2-11, 2-8).

NORTH COLLINS PREVAILS

NORTH COLLINS -- Hailey Jasinski collected three hits, including a double, to lead a balanced offensive attack as North Collins edged Cattaraugus-Little Valley 8-6 in a Division 2 East game.

Mckenna Rice (two RBIs) and Emily Gerdau added two hits; Milani Maciejewski belted a triple; and Cate Ayers chipped in a two-run double. North Collins is now 8-9 overall and 5-7 in the division.

Mackenzie Marek and Grace Arnold both had two hits and two RBIs and Destynee Ly also had two hits for the Timberwolves (2-10).
