Westfield’s Dellow leads 7 in area earning all-state honors

Westfield’s Haleigh Dellow has proven herself as one of the most talented softball players in the area.

The junior pitcher has once again received that same recognition at the state level.

Dellow was one of seven local student-athletes to be honored by the New York State Sportswriters & Coaches Organization for Girls Sports on its 32nd annual all-state teams.

Dellow was named to the First Team in Class D after a season during which she went 16-3 with 17 complete games and five shutouts in 19 starts. The right-hander struck out 222 in 118 innings, pitching to a 0.83 earned run average while holding opposing batters to a .163 average.

At the plate, Dellow hit .526 with 13 doubles, three triples and six home runs, including a pair of grand slams. She drove in 30 runs while scoring 37. Dellow was a Fourth Team choice in Class C a year ago.

North Collins placed two players on the Class D all-state team.

Junior catcher Hailey Jasinski — a First Team selection a year ago — was named to the Second Team while junior pitcher Sophie Vanstrom was named to the Fourth Team.

Jasinski hit .712 with 13 doubles, seven home runs, three triples and drove in 28 runs. From the circle, Vanstrom went 6-3 with 63 strikeouts over 79 innings pitched; then with her bat she hit .390, drove in 12 runs, hit three doubles and three home runs.

Ellicottville senior first baseman Harley Ficek was named to the Third Team in Class D. Ficek hit .326, drove in 15 runs and scored 13 runs for the Eagles, who lost to Westfield in the Section VI Class D title game.

In Class C, Maple Grove’s Erin Mansfield led the way with a Third Team selection. The junior shortstop hit .532 with a double, seven stolen bases and seven RBIs. She scored 17 runs, struck out just three times and made just five errors for a .932 fielding percentage.

Chautauqua Lake pitcher Olivia Herrington was named to the Fourth Team in Class C after a Fifth Team selection a year ago. The junior right-hander went 6-2 with one save in 12 games pitched, including nine starts this season. She struck out 141 in 66 innings and pitched to a 0.53 ERA while holding opposing batters to a .071 average. At the plate, Herrington hit .400 with eight doubles and a triple while driving in 12 runs and scoring 16.

Falconer shortstop Tess Spangenburg was the final local player honored. The senior was named to the Fifth Team in Class C. The senior hit .488 with six doubles, two triples and three home runs while driving in 19 runs and scoring 17. She struck out just four times on the season.

The Class AA Player of the Year was Section IX Monroe-Woodbury senior pitcher Brianna Roberts and the Coach of the Year was Monroe-Woodbury’s Penny Roberts.

Section VI student-athletes honored included: Lancaster senior pitcher Madison Balk (First Team), Lancaster junior catcher Ellie Park (Second Team), Williamsville North junior center fielder Ella Johel (Second Team), Orchard Park senior pitcher Madalyn Covelli (Third Team), Clarence senior shortstop Allie Greene (Third Team), Lancaster sophomore first baseman Francesca Morris (Fourth Team), Clarence sophomore pitcher Ella Zobel (Sixth Team) and Orchard Park sophomore shortstop Evelyn Wozniak (Seventh Team).

In Class A, the Player of the Year was Williamsville East junior catcher Ella Wesolowski and the Coach of the Year was Section V Webster-Schroeder’s Meaghan Keil.

Western New York players honored included: Nardin senior pitcher Julianna Verni (First Team), Nardin sophomore shortstop Erin Nuwer (Second Team), Williamsville South junior pitcher Gia Gangi (Second Team), Niagara Wheatfield junior shortstop Elanna Lysiak (Third Team), Niagara Wheatfield sophomore pitcher Julia Kwitchoff (Fourth Team), Starpoint senior shortstop Bailey Briggs (Sixth Team) and Lockport junior pitcher Brianna Delaney (Seventh Team).

The Class B Player of the Year was Section II Ichabod Crane senior first baseman Clare Knapp and the Coach of the Year was Ichabod Crane’s Tracy Nytransky.

Section VI players honored included: Depew sophomore catcher Mia Vanelli (First Team), Olean senior catcher JoJo Gibbons (Third Team), Olean senior pitcher Kylie Anastasia (Third Team), Royalton-Hartland senior pitcher Reanna Perkins (Third Team), Eden senior pitcher Jordan Lauer (Fifth Team) and Depew junior pitcher Jordan Kanick (Fifth Team).

In Class C, the Player of the Year was Section IV Greene senior pitcher Olivia Kennedy and the Coach of the Year was Section II Greenwich’s Bill Curley.

Western New York players honored included: Lancaster-St. Mary’s senior pitcher/shortstop Anna Dovey (First Team), Lancaster-St. Mary’s junior pitcher/first baseman Alexandra Packard (First Team), Lancaster-St. Mary’s senior catcher Lily Lauck (Second Team) and Portville senior pitcher Mallory Welty (Second Team)

The Class D Player of the Year was Section III Bishop Ludden senior shortstop Kaitlyn Kibling and the Coach of the Year was Section IV Deposit-Hancock’s Dan Briggs.
