Wallace captures Travel League’s US Open at Elkdale

SALAMANCA — The Wednesday Travel League held its third major of the season, the U.S. Open, at Elkdale Country Club.

Dave Wallace and Ed Tofil tied for the low round with 78s. Wallace was the overall winner after a third-hole tiebreaker to capture his first major victory. Josh Hilliker, Wayne Stoughton and Mike Wolfe all finished a stroke behind with 79s. Stoughton led the front nine with 36 and Tofil led the back nine with 39.

Lenny Leszkowicz was the B Flight winner with a birdie on the third tiebreaker hole over Jim Ellman Sr., Joe Bifaro and Gary Richardson. Dan Kaszuba and Bob Kujawa won the C and D Flights, respectively. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was John Tofil.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Stoughton (No. 3), Wallace (No. 4), Seb McAfee (No. 5), Dave Momberger (No. 8), Robert Calph (No. 9), Wolfe (No. 13) and Hilliker (No. 17); B Flight — Leszkowicz (No. 1), Richardson (No. 3), Dave Franklin (Nos. 6, 11), Jack Hood (No. 9), Bifaro (No. 16) and Ellman (No. 17); C Flight — Mike Willoughby (No. 1), Kaszuba (Nos. 2, 6), Gary Haase (No. 4), Pete Pinkoski (Nos. 5, 7, 14) and Bob Thompson (Nos. 8, 17); D Flight — Angelo Leone (No. 2), Don Kujawa (No. 3), Tom Sacilowski (Nos. 5, 6) and Bob Kujawa (No. 10).

Closest to the pin were Ron Szach (No. 4), Calph (No. 9), Tom Destro (No. 12) and Wolfe (No. 16). Winners of the Par-3 Contest were Wallace (A Flight — even), Bifaro (B — plus-3), Thompson (C — plus-1) and Bob Kujawa (D — plus-4). Winners of the Steeplechase were Wallace (A), Tony Destro (B), Frank Benamati (C) and Ken Kaus (D).

Top point winners were Wallace and Calph (54 apiece), Bifaro (45) and Haase (36). Season points leaders: 1. Ed Tofil (249), 2. Franklin (239), 3. Calph (234), 4. Wolfe (227), 5. Stoughton (188), 6. Bifaro (177), 7. Hilliker (168), 8. Thompson (137), 9. Sacilowski (136), 10. Wallace (131).
