Wednesday Travel League takes to Kennsington GC

CANFIELD, Ohio — The Wednesday Travel League made its eighth annual two-day trip to Boardman, Ohio on July 12-13.

On Tuesday, the league played the “Cousin Eddie’s Invitational” at Kennsington Golf Club.

Joe Bifaro was the grand champion with the low net round of 76. Runners-up were Tom Destro and Pat Weaver with 77s. In the B Flight, Dave Franklin won a tiebreaker over Ken Kaus with 86. Jaime Galarza was third, one stroke behind.

In the 2-man Handicapped Tournament, the winners were the team of Lenny Leszkowicz and Ed Tofil (159 net score). In second place with a 160 was the team of Bifaro and Don Kujawa. In third place with a 163 was the team of Jack Hood and Dave Wallace.

On Wednesday, the league held its normal Wednesday Travel League event at Reserve Run in Poland, Ohio. Robert Calph shot a new league course record of 1-over-par 72, breaking the old mark of 73, held by Ed Tofil. In a tie for second place with 77s were Pat Weaver and Dave Wallace. Ken Kaus shot 79. Calph led the front nine with a 1-under par 34. Joe Bifaro and Pete Gawron led the back nine with 1-over par 37s. Dan Kaszuba recorded his first eagle in league play with a 3 on the par-5 18th hole. The B Flight winner was Ed Tofil after a tiebreaker with Tom Destro and Mike Willoughby. Gary Haase was the C Flight winner. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award, in his league debut, was Tom McCarthy.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Calph (No. 5), Bifaro (No. 8), Kaszuba (No. 11), Gawron (No. 12), Dave Franklin (No. 15) and Wallace (No. 17); B Flight — Willoughby (Nos. 1, 9, 17), Lenny Leszkowicz (Nos. 2, 4), Tofil (Nos. 8, 16), Destro (Nos. 10, 12), Bob Thompson (No. 11) and Don Kujawa (No. 15); C Flight — Lou Polichetti (Nos. 3, 11), Frank Benamati (No. 4), Jack Hood (No. 5), Bob Kujawa (Nos. 6, 17) and Haase (No. 8).

Closest to the pin were Leszkowicz (No. 2), Bifaro (No. 4), Calph (No. 8), Thompson (No. 11), Don Kujawa (No. 15) and Wallace (No. 17). Winners of the Steeplechase were Calph (A), Paul Daley (B) and Haase (C).

Golfers shooting all-time low rounds were Weaver (77), Kaszuba (82), Leszkowicz (84) and Galarza (89).

Top point winners were Leszkowicz (60), Kaszuba (40), and Wallace, Bifaro, Tofil, Willoughby, Thompson and Don Kujawa (all with 36). Season points leaders: 1. Tofil (249), 2. Mike Wolfe (190), 3. Franklin and Calph (180 apiece), 5. Wayne Stoughton (174), 6. Josh Hilliker (159), 7. Dave Criscione (117), 8. Bifaro (113), 9. Thompson (110), 10. Jeff Nelson (106).
