Visiting golfers dominate Wednesday Travel League

ERIE, Pa. — Visiting golfers from out of state dominated this week’s Wednesday Travel League event at Erie Golf Club.

Mike Baron of Mesa, Arizona, smoked the field, shooting a 1-over-par 73 for the low round. After an opening double-bogey on the first hole, Baron was able to shoot 1-under the rest of the way. He led the front nine with 39 and the back nine with a 2-under-par 34.

Baron and Al Bradley of Munford, Tennessee, tied for the most points with 72 apiece. Tim Siragusa of Houston, Texas, finished in fifth place with 82 and Al Etzel of Ocala, Florida, was the B Flight champion.

Wayne Stoughton finished in second place with 80. Josh Hilliker and Jeff Nelson tied for third place with 81 apiece. Ed Tofil was the C Flight winner after a tie-breaker with Dave Wallace and Tim Walawender. Mike Willoughby won the D Flight after a tie-breaker with Jack Hood. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was John Tofil, earning his fifth award of the season.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Joe Bifaro (No. 1), Hilliker (Nos. 2, 8, 11), Bob Thompson (No. 4), Baron (Nos. 10, 17), Stoughton (No. 13) and Siragusa (No. 16); B Flight — Tony Destro (No. 3), Jeff Marsowicz (No. 4), John Waterman (No. 8), Ron Szach (No. 10), Bradley (No. 12) and Etzel (No. 15); C Flight — Ken Kaus (Nos. 3, 5, 9), Dan Kaszuba (No. 7), Pat Weaver (No. 10), Tom Destro (No. 11), Ed Tofil (No. 12) and Tim Walawender (No. 16); D Flight — Hood (Nos. 1, 13), Willoughby (Nos. 2, 6, 10, 15), Lenny Leszkowicz (No. 4), Bob Kujawa (No. 8) and Jaime Galarza (No. 17).

Closest to the pin were Bradley (Nos. 4, 12), Waterman (No. 8) and Baron (No. 17). Winners of the Steeplechase were Baron (A Flight), Szach (B Flight), Wallace (C Flight) and Jim Ellman Sr. (D Flight).

Top point winners were Baron and Bradley (72 apiece), Thompson and Marsowicz (36 apiece) and Willoughby (29). Season points leaders (through 15 events): 1. Ed Tofil (259), 2. Robert Calph (243), 3.
