Devils suffer road setback to Canisius

BUFFALO — Aaron Collins put up 13 points and Jacob Hougan added 11 when the Fredonia State men’s basketball team took on Canisius College on Sunday.

The Griffs won 98-52.

Hougan added five rebounds and two blocks. AJ Knight led the Devils with six rebounds. The Devils made a season-high 46 percent (6-of-3) of their 3-pointers.

Siem Uijtendaal led Canisius with 30 points, including 10-of -3 from beyond the arc, and Tahj Staveskie added 15.

Collins opened the game with a 3- pointer to give the Devils the quick lead. His second trey cut the Canisius lead to one, 13-12, with 11:22 on the clock. Collins nailed his third 3-pointer, keeping the Devils close, making it a 17-14 game at the 9:17 mark.

From there, the Griffs went on a 20-0 run to take command of the game. Following a My’Kell Kaigler layup, Canisius then scored the next 10 points, going up 47-16.

Caniusius led 58-23 at the half.

The Devils regrouped early in the second half, outscoring Canisius 12-11 over the first 9:24. The Griffs responded by scoring the next 18 points.

This marked the second straight year the Devils took on the nearby Division I program. Fredonia State head coach Sean Smiley played for Canisius bench boss Reggie Witherspoon during his playing career at the University at Buffalo.

The Devils fall to 0-5 on the season. They travel to John Carroll University on Wednesday.

FREDONIA STATE FALLS

POTSDAM — The Fredonia State hockey team scored a goal in the first and a goal in the third period, but could not overcome a three-goal second by Potsdam, dropping a 3-2 game on Saturday.

Greg Lee and Ryan Bailey both scored for the Devils.

Lee scored the game’s first goal nine minutes in on assists from Bailey and Spencer Quinn.

The Bears dominated play in the second period, scoring a pair of even-strength goals and finishing things off with a power play at the 19:07 mark.

The Devils made it a one-goal game late in the third when Bailey beat the Bears’ goalie at 15:56. Johnny Aonso assisted. Fredonia State pressed the action in the third, outshooting Potsdam, 20-7.

Logan Dyck made 31 saves for the Devils. Connor Green made 36 saves for Potsdam.

The Devils were 0-for-5 on power plays and the Bears went 1-for-4. Faceoffs were 38-36 in favor of Potsdam, which improved to 2-6-0 and 1-5-0 in the SUNYAC.

The Devils fall to 1-6-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the SUNYAC. They have next weekend off before playing host to Brockport and Geneseo the first weekend of December.
