T’birds open wrestling season in style

Joslyn named MOW as Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer earns Byron-Bergen title

BERGEN — Four weight-class champions helped Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer run away with the team title at the Triple-O Mechanical 27th annual Byron-Bergen Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

Jordan Joslyn — who earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award for the lower weights — Martin Ohlsson, Trent Burchanowski and John Watson all took first while Gavin Burchanowski, Thandon Bensink, Jack Bourgeois and Jayden Malecki were all second for the Thunderbirds.

Joslyn pinned Pioneer’s Wyatt Opferbeck in 2:23 at 126 pounds, Ohlsson pinned Pioneer’s Xander Kirsch in 5:44 at 138 pounds, Trent Burchanowski pinned Perry’s Noah Leitten in 3:19 at 145 pounds and Watson earned a 4-0 decision over Bourgeois at 152 pounds.

Mason Maring (189 pounds) and Gavin Segovia (285 pounds) earned third-place finishes for Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer while Brad Smith was fourth at 160 pounds.

NEWMAN, LUNDGREN WIN TITLES

CICERO — Dylan Newman and Karsen Lundgren won their respective weight classes as Falconer/Cassadaga Valley took fifth place at the Bill Andersen Memorial Wrestling Tournament hosted by Cicero-North Syracuse High School on Saturday.

Newman won the 102-pound weight class with a 4-0 victory over General Brown’s Zoey Jewett in the final. Lundgren pinned Cicero-North Syracuse’s Javone Dawkins in 2:23 in the 110-pound final.

The Golden Cougars’ Austin Chase lost in the 145-pound final to finish 3-1 on the day.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Devyn Morrison was fourth at 220 pounds and Charlie Reichenbach was fifth at 145 pounds while Evan Newman (110 pounds), Brodie Little (160 pounds) and Dalton Caldwell (172 pounds) all took sixth place.

HOFFMAN SHINES IN HAMBURG

HAMBURG — Fredonia/Silver Creek/Forestville’s Lucas Hoffman went a perfect 8-0 at 118 pounds and was named to the all-tournament team at the VinLouie’s Pizzeria 16th annual Southtowns Duals at St. Francis High School on Friday and Saturday.

The Hillbillies went 2-6 in their eight matches, beating East Aurora/Holland and St. Mary’s by identical 48-30 scores.

Sam Wray earned six wins with four pins at 215 pounds; Dawson Russo earned five wins with three pins between 189-215 pounds; and Cameron Ingram had two pins between 132-138 pounds.

Cannon LeGrano, Jomar Quiles, Julian Ocasio, Josh Thurber, Logan Wright and Dominic Ruiz all picked up their first varsity victories for Fredonia/Silver Creek/Forestville.

“It was a good experience for all the wrestlers, especially the new ones, to see what a tournament that size is all about,” Hillbillies head coach Joe Santilli said. “It’ll definitely help them going forward as the team contiues to grow and develop.”

Gowanda went 4-4 with victories over East Aurora/Holland, Fredonia/Silver Creek/Forestville, Salamanca and St. Mary’s.

Salamanca finished 0-8.

Hamburg/Eden and Attica/Batavia finished with matching 7-1 records.
