Fredonia is HM in state hoops poll
SYRACUSE — High school basketball teams from Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties continue to find their place in this week’s New York State Sportswriters Association rankings.
In the boys’ poll, Salamanca made the biggest jump, improving six spots to No. 24 in Class B, while Fredonia and Southwestern are new honorable-mention entries. AIS Poly Prep is No. 1. Other Western New York teams ranked in that class are Timon-St. Jude (No. 4), Nichols (No. 7), Lewiston-Porter (No. 14), Allegany-Limestone (No. 19). Depew and St. Mary’s are honorable mention.
Clymer improved to No. 10, two places better than last week, in Class D; Panama moved up two spots to No. 13; Westfield dropped two places to No. 19; and Sherman remained honorable mention. South Kortright/Andes of Section IV is No. 1.
In Class C, Randolph fell 11 spots to No. 14; Frewsburg is a new honorable-mention entry, joining Silver Creek, which remained unchanged. Holland is at No. 17 and Delhi of Section IV is No. 1.
Jamestown remained No. 16 in Class AA, two spots behind Niagara Falls and six places ahead of No. 22 Health Sciences. Lockport is honorable mention. AIS Long Island Lutheran is No. 1.
Ranked teams in Class A are Amherst (No. 11), Canisius (No. 27), and McKinley, Niagara Wheatfield, North Tonawanda, St. Francis HM, St. Joe’s and Williamsville South are honorable mention.
Among area girls teams, Randolph dropped one place to No. 4 in Class C. In the same class, Frewsburg fell seven spots to No. 23. Portville is No. 7 and Millbrook of Section IX is No. 1
In Class D, Panama (No. 5), Sherman (No. 9) and Clymer (No. 10) remained unchanged. West Canada Valley of Section III is No. 1.
Southwestern (No. 12) improved one spot in Class B, while Depew is No. 2, Lewiston-Porter No. 6 and Eden No. 20. AIS Dalton School is No. 1.
In Class AA, Cardinal O’Hara (No. 9) and Lancaster (No. 14) are the ranked WNY teams. AIS Long Island Lutheran is No. 1.
Finally, in Class A, Nichols is No. 2, behind top-ranked CHSAA St. Joseph by the Sea. Other area ranked teams are Williamsville South (No. 5), Hamburg (No. 10), Sweet Home (No. 18), Sacred Heart (No. 22), St. Mary’s (No. 26) and Kenmore West (No. 30).
