Chautauqua Lake’s Gabi Freeburg earns medal at states

SYRACUSE — Several local girls made history Friday by taking part in the inaugural New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Wrestling Invitational at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.

Chautauqua Lake’s Gabi Freeburg came home with a medal.

The Thunderbirds’ sophomore received a first-round bye before pinning General Brown senior Brystol Branche in 5:01 to open her day at 235 pounds. A 2-0 loss to Waverly junior Mackenzie Laforest sent Freeburg to the consolation bracket. After Freeburg was pinned by Niskayuna-Schenectady senior Brianna Newton in 2:41, she was pinned by Branche in 3:21 to settle for sixth place.

At 94 pounds, Fredonia junior Meyah Aponte won her opening match against General Brown freshman Samantha Danyi with a 2-minute pin. Camden seventh-grader Riley Meagher then sent Aponte to the consolation bracket with a 17-2 technical fall. Aponte then lost a 7-6 decision to Niagara Wheatfield eighth-grader Lily Pieczonka.

Fredonia freshman Leah Waite was pinned by Niagara Wheatfield seventh-grader Gabriella Barone in 3:07 to open her day at 100 pounds. In the consolation bracket, Waite pinned Union-Endicott senior Sabrina Strauss in 36 seconds and then pinned Riverhead senior Ismeri Morales in 2:36. Waite’s day came to an end when Holland Patent sophomore Alyssa Russell pinned her in 2:17.

At 107 pounds, Falconer senior Brooklyn Pryll was pinned by Sidney seventh-grader Isabella Phelps in 24 seconds to start the day. In the consolation bracket, Bryll earned a 4-0 decision over Geneva freshman Katie Thibault before losing a 6-0 decision to North Tonawanda junior Brenna McCarley.

Chautauqua Lake sophomore Gabriella Testa was pinned by Colonie junior Evynne Farrel in 44 seconds to open her day at 126 pounds. In the consolation bracket, Testa pinned Alexander eighth-grader Emma Gallaway in 1:35 before Midlakes junior Olivia Miles pinned Testa in 3:17.

Chautauqua Lake senior Mia Smith was pinned by Putnam Valley senior Joan Demetroules in 3:24 to open her day at 132 pounds. In the consolation bracket, Smith pinned Copiague senior Francheska Guzman in 3:19 before losing a 7-1 decision to Mepham junior Talia Robles.

At 100 pounds, Fredonia junior AJ Johnson was pinned by Bethpage freshman Gabrielle Severin in 2:20 to open her day. In the consolation bracket, Johnson was pinned in 47 seconds by Niskayuna-Schenectady eighth-grader Kalissa Albright.

Gowanda senior Emma Schindler lost her opening match at 120 pounds to Columbia freshman Bella Satalino via a pin in 2:52 before getting pinned by Brockport junior Brooke Walsh in 1:51 in the consolation bracket.

Also at 120 pounds, Chautauqua Lake junior Madison Szymanowski got pinned in 3:52 by Mechanicville-Stillwater sophomore Delaney Bisaillon to open the day. In the consolation bracket, Szymanowski lost a 3-2 decision to Fulton senior Isabella Bogardus.

At 132 pounds, Gowanda senior Ke’ya Stevens lost a 7-4 decision to Bellmore JFK sophomore Gabriella Schechtman to open the day. In the consolation bracket, Stevens was pinned by Horseheads senior Hailey Berry in 56 seconds.

At 138 pounds, Chautauqua Lake junior Sophia Gervasio lost her opening match via pin in 5:22 to Chenango Forks freshman Emily Sullivan. In the consolation bracket, Gervasio lost a 14-1 major decision to Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk junior Alivia Ortiz.

Chautauqua Lake junior Caroline Apthorpe was pinned in 37 seconds by Granville sophomore Jaymie Landon to open her day at 145 pounds. In the consolation bracket, Apthorpe was pinned by Shenendehowa sophomore Brooke Gladue in 1:57.

Also at 145 pounds, Chautauqua Lake seventh-grader Lillian Hyde pinned Holland Patent senior Stephanie Grocholski in 3:13 to open her day. After getting pinned by West Seneca West/East junior Christina Evans in 2:35, Hyde was pinned by Gladue in 3:43.

Dunkirk freshman Eva Colon-DeJesus was pinned by Warrensburg/Lake George junior Olivia Lapoint in 4:50 to open her day at 152 pounds. Colon-DeJesus was then pinned by Horseheads sophomore MayAnna Sindlinger in 27 seconds.

Champions crowned Saturday were: General Brown freshman Zoey Jewett (94 pounds), Barone (100 pounds), Minisink Valley eighth-grader Sara Pauls (107 pounds), Mepham junior Yianna Foufas (114 pounds), Seaford junior Ashley Diaz (120 pounds), Rocky Point junior Alexandra Viera (126 pounds), Tioga senior Emily Sindoni (132 pounds), Duanesburg-Schoharie senior Zoey Lints (138 pounds), Waterloo sophomore Madison Westerberg (145 pounds), Shenendehowa junior Isabella Gretzinger (152 pounds), Mexico senior Renne Kinikin (165 pounds), Canandaigua Academy senior Sophie Pollack (185 pounds) and Laforest (235 pounds).
