ALBANY — Last year, Jordan Joslyn and Tavio Hoose came up short in their quests for podium finishes at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Wrestling Championships.

Today, they’ll both get another opportunity.

In fact, they’re still in contention for the top spot on the podium in their respective weight classes.

Joslyn, a junior from Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer, and Hoose, a freshman from Southwestern, both went 2-0 to reach the semifinals after the opening day of this year’s wrestling championships at MVP Arena.

“I’m very confident in how he can finish,” CL/W/P/C head coach Ken Rowe said. “Out here, anything can happen.”

Fourteen local wrestlers qualified for the state tournament and 12 are still in contention to finish on the podium.

Competing at 126 pounds, Joslyn was the most dominant of the local grapplers. He opened with a pin of Section III Marcellus/Onondaga’s Colin Sherer in 3:19 and followed that up with a 16-0 technical fall over Section V Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Waylan Winseman in 3:43.

“When you tech the No. 2 seed, that’s pretty dominant,” Rowe said of Joslyn’s victory over Winseman. “I never sense nerves. Sometimes mid-match he’ll get in a funk … he’s just been wrestling well. Hopefully that continues.”

Hoose methodically moved into the semifinals at 172 pounds as well. First, he beat Section I Pearl River’s Michael McCarvill 7-0. Next, Hoose topped Section IV Sidney’s Trevor Harrington 6-3.

“Tavio has a legitimate shot at winning this tournament and definitely a strong shot at making the finals,” Southwestern head coach Johnny Vogan said. “The kid he has in the semifinals is dangerous and has pinned almost every kid he’s wrestled this year. … The No. 1 seed was upset so we really feel like if we can get through the semifinals, he has a great shot. That’s what he’s been working for all year.”

Southwestern freshman Carmine Calimeri had a great start to his day at 118 pounds with a pin in 3:32 of Section VIII Island Trees’ Jefry Trejo-Pacheco and a 5-2 win over Section XI Shoreham-Wading River’s Chris Colon, but he was sent to the consolation bracket when Section V Addison’s Cade Sands pinned him in 1:47.

“The kid that beat him definitely has a legitimate shot at winning the tournament,” Vogan said of Sands. “I didn’t expect (Calimeri) to get pinned, but I told him he has to move forward and finish top four or top six.”

Trojans junior Kenji Walters pinned Section X Gouverneur’s James Minckler in 5:41 to begin his day at 110 pounds, but was sent to the consolation bracket by Section IV Unatego-Unadilla Valley’s Caleb Cole, who beat him 8-0.

“Kenji just ran into a hammer. It happens and he has to recover. His weight class is also really tough,” Vogan said. “We knew going into that match he would have to pull something off to pull it out. I wouldn’t be surprised if (Cole) is the state champion or runner-up.”

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer will have four wrestlers in addition to Joslyn competing for podium finishes today.

At 138 pounds, Martin Ohlsson pinned Section XI Shoreham Wading River’s Thomas Palumbo in 1:46 to begin his day before dropping an 8-6 decision to Section III Central Valley Academy’s Cooper Reed. Ohlsson responded with an 8-2 win over Section II Duanesburg/Schoharie’s Daniel Stealey and a pin of Gouverneur’s Turner Sochia in 2:12.

“I know he’s a kid that belongs on the podium,” Rowe said of Ohlsson. “That match that he lost, he gave up too many points early and that’s what kept him from winning that match. … He’s placed here before; he knows what he’s doing.”

Trent Burchanowski had a similar day at 145 pounds. First, the Clymer senior pinned Section VII Beekmantown’s Jack Brown in 3:43 before he was handed an 18-2 technical-fall loss by Section IV Tioga’s Drew Macumber. Burchanowski responded with a pin of Collegiate School’s Liam Stiles in 1:52 and another pin of Section IV Walton-Delaware Academy’s Noah Sovocool in 4:34.

“It was a style that he wasn’t accustomed to … and it really shut him down,” Rowe said of Burchanowski’s loss.

Panama junior John Watson earned a 3-2 decision over Section III Camden’s Sean Seymore before he suffered a 16-1 technical fall in 4:13 to Gouverneur’s Vandavian Way at 152 pounds.

“He wasn’t 100% during his first match, but he did what he had to do to get the win,” Rowe said. “I’m comfortable that with a nice rest and some food in his belly, I think he’ll come in ready to roll.”

Panama junior Ison Shirley is still alive at 215 pounds after he pinned Hackley’s Liam Abraham in 4:30. After Section II Salem/Cambridge’s Evan Day pinned Shirley, he fought back with a pin of Petrides’ Juan Vasquez in 1:45 and a 2-1 win over Section XI John Glenn’s Elijah Porpora.

“There’s really no shock as far as the venue is concerned,” Rowe said. “They are coming to wrestle. … To have five kids at the state tournament is awesome … we still have five wrestling. We’re in a good place.”

Two Falconer/Cassadaga Valley wrestlers remain in contention for podium finishes.

At 145 pounds, Austin Chase pinned Section I Pearl River’s Aidan Veirun in 1:41 before he dropped a 6-3 decision to Section II Fonda-Fultonville/Johnstown’s Owen Hicks.

“That kid is a stud. Austin wrestled really well against him,” Falconer/Cassadaga Valley head coach Drew Wilcox said of Hicks. “We thought we had an outside shot to beat the kid. I don’t really think Austin could’ve wrestled any better.”

The Golden Cougars’ Brodie Little escaped with a 4-3 ultimate-tiebreaker victory at 160 pounds when his opponent, Dominick LaPier of Section VII Ausable Valley, was called for locking his hands. Little then lost 6-1 to Section V Bolivar-Richburg’s Tavyn MacDonnell.

“A win is a win down here. We preach that we want to finish guys, not fend them off,” Wilcox said. “Hopefully he can do that tomorrow. I think he can wrestle (MacDonnell). On the right day, I think that’s one we can win. Today wasn’t the day.”

Maple Grove’s Matt Trim will wrestle for a podium spot at 189 pounds for first-year head coach Josh Reed, who himself qualified for the state tournament as a senior at Webster Schroeder in 2012. Trim pinned Horace Mann’s Ivan Dolphan in 2:42 before dropping a 3-0 decision to Section II Granville/Fort Ann’s Brent Perry.

“I saw a lot of confidence building,” Reed said of Trim’s first match. “I saw a couple of opportunities where he could’ve wrestled better for a better outcome (in the second match).”

“I know how hard he works and the effort he puts in every single day,” Reed added. “I had a lot of confidence that we were going to move forward with victories in those matches.”

In the consolation bracket, Trim beat Section V South Seneca’s Dakota Stewart 13-2 and pinned Port Jervis’ Maddox McCormick in 33 seconds.

Randolph’s Ryan Carpenter was pinned by Eagle Academy’s Christian Solano at the 1:07 mark of their 285-pound opening match. Carpenter rebounded with a 3-1 victory over John Glenn’s Melkin Alfaro-Chavez.

“I think it was a missed opportunity. We prepared to wrestle him and we scouted that kid. You can watch it on film, but it’s completely different sometimes when you get out there. I think he got caught trying to do too much. He tried to do a move he doesn’t usually use,” Randolph head coach Todd Conley said. “I think he’s disappointed. We had high expectations coming here to get on that podium and that’s still an attainable thing.”

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Dylan Newman went 2-2 at 102 pounds and Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Mason Maring went 0-2 at 189 pounds to be eliminated from contention.

Wrestling will begin at 9:30 a.m. today with opening ceremonies for the championships scheduled for 5:50 p.m. Championship finals will be wrestled beginning at 6 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
