WEST ELLICOTT — A memorable season continued Saturday for the Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer wrestling team.

Led by 126-pounder Jordan Joslyn, the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, five Thunderbirds claimed five first-place finishes en route to a resounding team title at the Section VI Class C/D Championships at Southwestern Central School.

“It’s business. It’s just what we expect and what they expect,” Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer head coach Ken Rowe said. ” … These kids expect to come in and win.”

In addition to Joslyn, 138-pounder Martin Ohlsson, 145-pounder Trent Burchanowski, 152-pounder John Watson and 215-pounder Ison Shirley captured titles in their respective weight classes as Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer won the team championship with 281 points.

“This group, top to bottom, no matter their background, they really have kind of gelled,” said Rowe, whose team has already won the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 and Section VI Division II dual meet championships this winter. ” … They come in ready for business.”

Wilson was second with 127 points, followed by Newfane (116), Medina (114) and Southwestern (113.5).

The top five wrestlers in each weight class automatically qualified for next weekend’s Section VI Division II state qualifier at Lake Shore High School.

The Thunderbirds will be taking essentially their entire team.

In addition to its weight-class champions, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer will send Gavin Burchanowski (102 pounds), Jayden Malecki (172 pounds) and Mason Maring (189 pounds) as second-place finishers; third-place finishers Thandon Bensink (110 pounds), Jack Bourgeois (145 pounds) and Bradley Smith (152 pounds); fourth-place finisher Gavin Segovia (285 pounds); and even fifth-place finisher Walter Lukasiak (285 pounds), an eighth-grader with just a 7-6 record on the season.

“The fact that we’re bringing the entire team to Lake Shore is awesome. Not a single kid is done now,” Rowe said. “The longer we go, the more I’m realizing what these kids are capable of. … Walter, our ‘B’ heavyweight, we knew he could score points and he actually qualified.”

Southwestern, the second-best local team, featured the 118-pound champion in Carmine Calimeri and the 172-pound winner Tavio Hoose. Kenji Walter (110 pounds) finished second, while Brayden Potter (189 pounds) and Peter Conley (215 pounds) both advanced for the Trojans with dramatic victories in their fifth-place matches — Conley’s with a reversal in the dying seconds.

Maple Grove’s Matt Trim won the 189-pound weight bracket with teammate Kolden McCall taking third place at 215 pounds. The Red Dragons’ Jaxon Kraft (126 pounds) and Dan Quattrone (152 pounds) took fifth place.

Gowanda’s Michael Horth was second at 145 pounds; Greg Reid (118 pounds) and Nathan Warrior (145 pounds) were fourth; and Owen Pfaffenbach (110 pounds) and Jayden Fish (118 pounds) were fifth.

Randolph’s Ryan Carpenter finished second at 285 pounds; Domanik Clark (138 pounds) and Caden Inkley (132 pounds) placed third; and Joseph Nottingham (132 pounds) placed fourth.

Salamanca’s Konner Spring took second at 126 pounds and Frewsburg’s Quinlan Smathers placed third at 160 pounds.

All of those place finishers will likely have to get past a Thunderbird next weekend if they want to qualify for the state tournament.

“Right now is usually where we start looking at the individual part. With the way the team is, we’re not really even having that conversation. We’re going to expect to move on. We are going to plan on bringing the team — I mean that sincerely,” Rowe said. “Our goal is to take the team. I know that is an extremely tough task, but that’s literally how we’re looking at this next week: We’re going to take our entire team to Albany.”
