In nearly every big spot this year, both on the football field this past fall and now this winter on the basketball court, Ethan Fry came up with a special performance to carry the Fredonia Hillbillies to a victory. So when the Hillbillies lost on their home floor on Senior Night to Allegany-Limestone, it almost felt as if the story still had a few pages left to be written.

Tuesday night, the storybook ending was completed. Fry posted his third triple-double of the season as the Hillbillies righted the wrong of their Senior Night loss with one final victory on the Fredonia High School floor.

Fredonia earned a 74-52 win over the Akron Tigers in the first round of the Section VI Class B2 boys basketball playoffs on Tuesday.

“I didn’t want to go out on a loss at all … especially on this court. I’ve had so many memories here. You love to play here. It’s a great atmosphere,” Fry said. “It was nice to get a win in my final game here. I’m definitely going to miss it.”

Fredonia head coach Nick Bertrando was happy to have a second chance to send his seniors out with a win at home.

“Obviously, Senior Night did not end the way we wanted it to. We were fortunate enough to play one last game here to send these guys out in style,” Bertrando said. “For them to leave here with that as their last game on the hardwood, it’s pretty special.”

Fry scored a game-high 21 points, recorded a team-high 12 assists and added 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive end, to notch his third triple-double over the course of less than 30 days. Fry also had triple-doubles against Olean and Dunkirk.

“I’m one of the leaders on this team and I’ve been here before. I’ve been playing varsity basketball since sophomore year,” said Fry. “This isn’t new for me. I just try to help the guys out, help them get their confidence up. When I’m rolling, everyone else is rolling, and the team is rolling.”

“As a three-year varsity player, who has been a staple of the program for the last three years, it’s kind of nice to see it come full-circle,” Bertrando said. “For him to continue on this really, really nice senior year for him across the board, I’m excited for him.”

Fredonia (14-7, 10-seed Class B2) jumped out to a 22-14 lead to close the first quarter and led for the entire final three quarters of the game.

“We wanted to get out in transition and get back to our Fredonia basketball ways. That’s exactly what we did tonight,” Fry said.

The Hillbillies held a 41-24 advantage at halftime and led by double digits the whole second half. Akron (11-10, 15-seed Class B2) was outscored in every quarter on Tuesday.

Just as Fry said after his last triple-double, it could not have been done without his teammates making shots. Fredonia had four players in double figures on Tuesday, as Davi White had 20 points, Jay Hawk had 14 points to go with 12 rebounds, and Mike Hahn had 10 points — all in the first half.

“My teammates were hitting shots. That’s really what opened it up for me. The defense had to close out on them, and that left the lane wide open for me,” said Fry. “It was a whole team effort tonight.”

Fry had 12 of the 21 total assists for Fredonia on the night.

“When you get that type of sharing the ball and ultimately putting guys in position to get looks … I like our aggressiveness. I like the fact that we got balanced scoring — that we’re not relying on one or two guys,” Bertrando said.

To go with three points in the fourth quarter from senior Keegan Whitfield, the Hillbillies also got some of their younger players in the scorebook. Sophomore Ashton Putney, sophomore Luca Gullo and freshman R.J. Koopman all scored in the Fredonia playoff win.

Fredonia now advances to face 7-seed Burgard on Thursday at 7 p.m. on the MST Prep campus. The winner of that game moves on to play at 2-seed Cleveland Hill on Saturday at noon.

“Burgard is a very athletic and extremely quick team. They’ve got some nice players,” Bertrando said. “They play an aggressive style of defense. We’re definitely going to have to handle the pressure or we’re going to have some struggles on Thursday.”
