Thunderbirds post win over Wildcats

MAYVILLE — Lawson Ormsby scored 17 points to lead Chautauqua Lake over Sherman 40-29 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West action on Thursday.

Logan Tarr added another 14 points in the Thunderbirds (7-9, 5-4) winning effort while Brayden Hayes scored 20 points for Sherman (9-8, 3-7).

Gian Nuzzo led the Eagles (9-7, 7-0) with 14 points while Caedon Wyatt added 10 points.

Forestville’s (4-12, 2-5) effort was led by Brayden Smith with 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

FALCONER — Falconer held off Gowanda 63-52 for a Division 1 East victory.

Rodger Markham led Falconer (11-4, 5-3) with 24 points, seven steals and five rebounds; Mathis Baehr scored 11 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished five assists, had two steals and a block; and Dom Delaney had 10 boards.

Gowanda’s (8-9, 2-7) effort was led by Quentin Centner with 22 points.

NORTH COLLINS — North Collins put it together in the second half to get past Pine Valley 57-54 in Division 2 East play.

Matt Sweet scored 27 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished four assists and had five steals to lead North Collins (9-5, 6-1); Derek Ebersole hit 23 points, hauled in six boards, dealt three assists and grabbed two steals; and on the glass Asher Parnitzke had nine boards, Walter Ebersole had eight and Scott Keen pulled in five.

Pine Valley’s (3-12, 2-5) effort was led by Jon Sheldon and Miles Volk with 14 points apiece.

WESTFIELD — Westfield doubled Brocton’s score for a 52-25 Division 2 West victory.

Carson Swanson led Westfield (11-6, 6-3) with 33 points, six rebounds, six steals and three assists; Logan Tuah added three assists and five steals; Carter Russo had three assists, three steals and a block; and Layton Ormsby had five blocks.

Brocton’s (3-14, 0-10) effort was led by Michael Garcia and Jeremy Weisner with six points each.

BEARS WIN AGAIN

SINCLAIRVILLE — Connor Murray scored 19 points, Gavin Smith added 18 and Zack Carr chipped in 13 to lead Frewsburg to a 69-48 Division 1 East victory over Casssadga Valley.

The Bears (12-4, 7-2) jumped out to an 18-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Cougars clawed back in it to trail 49-43 heading into the final period. Frewsburg, however, put the game away by finishing the game on 20-5 run.

Carr also had five assists and five rebounds; Connor Murray collected five steals; and Caleb Stahlman grabbed five boards for the Bears.

Cassadaga Valley (5-13, 1-9) was led by Hunter Johnson with 23 points and Ace Pierce had 10.

WARRIORS DOWN GATORS

SALAMANCA — Lucus Brown recorded his third double-double in his last four games and Salamanca ran its record to 14-2 with a 54-42 Division 1 West victory over Allegany-Limestone.

The Warriors (7-0 in the division) led 32-31 after three quarters, but went on a 22-11 in the final period to complete a regular-season sweep of the Gators (13-3, 4-3).

Brown finished with 27 points, 10 rebounds and two steals, and Andy Herrick chipped in 15 points and eight boards.

Gavin Truman paced Allegany-Limestone, which trailed 23-9 at halftime with 16 points.

“To hold them to 9, that’s the best defense we’ve played since I’ve been here,” Salmanca coach Adam Bennett said. “They’re a solid team, they’re well-coached, they run good stuff and we just played outstanding defense in the first half.”

The Gators outscored Salamanca 22-9 in the third quarter and led by a point late in the period, but the Warriors played “outstanding” the rest of the way, according to Bennett.
