Celauro earns first career win

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Fredonia State softball team wrapped up its Spring Trip with games against Carthage College and Macalester College on Friday.

In the Devils’ final game of the trip, freshman Mack Celauro went 5ª innings to earn her first career win, a 7-4 victory. She gave up six hits and four runs — one earned — before Vanessa Galbraith came in for the save, retiring all four batters she faced.

Celauro shut out Macalester through the first five innings before being touched for four runs in the bottom of the sixth. By then the Devils put five runs on the board and maintained a 5-4 lead.

Galbraith came on with two outs and a runner on and retired the next four batters for the save.

The Devils tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to give the final.

Emily Chelius had her second double in as many games for the Devils’ only extra-base hit.

Allie Wandell and Mac Miller each had two RBIs, and Megan Guidry and Wandell had two hits apiece.

The Devils dropped the opener, 6-1.

A double by Chelius scored Wandell for the Devils’ only run. Wandell was 2 for 3 and reached base a third time with a walk. Alyssa Santiago had the team’s only other hit.

Carthage scored two runs in the first, third, and fifth innings off of Chelius, who threw a complete game. She scattered nine hits, gave up five earned and struck out five.

Fredonia State came up short on both ends of a doubleheader Thursday, falling 5-0 to Carroll and 11-5 to Beloit.

Against Carroll, the Devils offense was held to two hits — one by Chelius and one by Alex Brizendine. Chelius pitched an effective game on the mound, going all seven innings, scattering eight hits and giving up three earned runs while striking out six.

Carroll scored two runs in the top of the first and three in the third to account for their five runs.

The Devils started off the second game with a bang — literally. Wandell blasted her first home run of the season to stake the team to a 1-0 over Beloit.

However, a three-spot in the bottom of the inning put the Buccaneers in the lead.

Fredonia State retook the lead with three of their own in the top of the third. After a walk to Alexis Wulf and an hit by pitch to Megan Guidry, Miller laid down a sacrifice bunt that turned into an error, scoring Wulf. With one out, Santiago would ground out to plate Guidry. An Erin Cunningham single scored Miller for a 4-3 Devils’ lead.

It was short-lived, however, when Beloit put up another three runs in the bottom of the inning, going ahead 6-4. Three more runs in the fifth, and two in the sixth gave the Buccaneers an 11-4 lead.

Fredonia State tacked on one more score in the top of the seventh. Guidry singled to start the inning, and eventually scored on a single by Santiago.

Wandell and Cunningham both went 2 for 4, Santiago drove in a pair, and Guidry scored twice.
