D2 West’s best: Westfield’s Swanson named Player Of Year; Clymer’s King is COY
In this December 2022 file photo, Westfield’s Carson Swanson drives to the basket against Ellicottville during the Southwestern Tournament.
How good was Carson Swanson’s sophomore season on the hardwood?
Well, the statistics tell the story.
The Westfield sophomore averaged 27.7 points — second in Section VI (by a 10th of a point) — 6.1 rebounds, 5.1 steals and 4.1 assists per game. Tack on 63 3-pointers and surpassing the 1,000-point career mark, it was quite the basketball winter for the talented guard.
Not surprisingly, Swanson was named the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West Player of the Year.
Joining Swanson on the First Team were seniors Austin White and Blake Kopta of Clymer; senior Lawson Ormsby of Chautauqua Lake; senior Brayden Hayes of Sherman; and sophomore Carter Brink of Panama.
Second-team selections were sophomore Bryce Hinsdale and senior Gabe Roth of Panama; junior Jonathan Massing of Clymer; senior Kegan Ayers of Sherman; senior Colin McPherson of Maple Grove; and senior Chris Rotunda of Westfield.
Honorable-mention choices were sophomores Alex Barmore and Tate Catanese of Panama; senior Jacob Swabik of Sherman; senior Dylan Michael of Clymer; sophomores Michael Garcia and Jeremy Weisner of Brocton; senior Logan Tarr and freshman Nick Jacobson of Chautauqua Lake; junior Logan Tuah of Westfield; and seniors Cam Bower and Brendan Weatherup and junior Marcus Laney of Maple Grove.
Irv King of Clymer was named the Coach of the Year; Maple Grove was the recipient of the Team Sportsmanship Award; and Maple Grove junior Jack Mansfield was chosen the recipient of the Individual Sportsmanship Award.
