Fredonia drops final game 5-1 at Mingo Bay Baseball Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Fredonia baseball team had no problem getting runners on base in its game against Chester (S.C.), but the Hillbillies struggled getting those runners on the board and fell 5-1 in the Mingo Bay Classic.

“We had runners on all day,” Fredonia head coach Tim Cowan stated. “We left 12 runners on base, it was great to them there, but we weren’t able to cash them in when we needed.”

The Hillbillies fell back 5-0 before finally getting on the board in the sixth inning after loading the bases. Matt Cowan, AJ Kinney and Micah Davis all worked walks to load the bases and then a wild pitch allowed Cowan to streak home for the Hillbillies’ only run of the game.

Owen Rush got the nod on the mound and went 2 1/3 while giving up two runs and striking out one and Nathan Sercu finished the game with two strikeouts and a walk.

Ashton Putney recorded two hits in the loss, both Cowan and Sercu had a hit and a walk and Luca Gullo walked and stole third base.

The next time Fredonia is in action is on the road next Wednesday against formidable league opponent Gowanda in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 action.

“It was terrific,” Cowan said about Fredonia’s experience at the Mingo Bay Baseball Classic. “We were able to get seven different players time on the mound and saw strong pitching in all four games from our opponents. That’s something we can’t simulate in the gym and we’re hoping that pays dividends because we’ll be tested right off the bat.”

NORTH COLLINS EDGES LAKE SHORE
