The Fredonia State softball team picked up its first SUNYAC win of the season with a 5-1 win over Brockport in game one of a doubleheader Saturday. In game two, the Devils fell to Brockport 6-4.
GAME 1
The Devils got to work early with lead-off hitter Allie Wandell (Newark Valley/Newark Valley HS) singling in the bottom of the first. Wandell would score for Fredonia off a Alyssa Santiago (Spring Glen/Ellenville HS) double to take an early 1-0 lead. Riley Barrett for Brockport singled in the top of the third and would score after Kellie Gentile flew out to left field to tie the game at one.
Fredonia State’s Victoria Pauwels (Florida, N.Y./ S.S. Seward Institute) singled in the fourth and, after a Wandell triple, the Devils recaptured the lead. Wandell would score off a Mac Miller sacrifice fly to bring the score to 3-1.
The Devils would finish the game scoring a run in the fifth and sixth inning to close out the game 5-1.

GAME 2
Despite Fredonia finishing the game with six more hits than their opponent, Brockport would capitalize on a series of errors from the Devils at the top of the third to go up 3-1. It took Fredonia State two innings to even things up, before taking its only lead of the game in the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, an Emily Chelius single and two wild pitches put her on third base where she was hit home by Megan Guidry (Newburg/Valley Central HS) on a groundout to second.
Fredonia State’s 4-3 lead did not last long as Brockport would tie the game 4-4 in the following inning.
Brockport took the lead for good in the seventh inning, thanks to a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch.
Wandell led the Devils with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI while both Santiago and Guidry went 1 for 4 with an RBI.
The Devils now move to 2-18 on the season and 1-5 in the SUNYAC. Fredonia State will next play a doubleheader at St. John Fisher today starting at 3 p.m.
