Putney tosses 5-inning no-hitter

The Fredonia Hillbillies could do no wrong in Monday’s Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball game against Falconer and it started with Ashton Putney on the mound.

Putney was unhittable, throwing a no-hitter in five innings, striking out 10 and walking one batter to lead the Hillbillies past the Golden Falcons 14-0.

Fredonia (9-4, 9-4) didn’t need much run support, but it got it with another big performance by Owen Rush collecting three hits, including a home run, two RBIs and four runs scored. Andrew Cowan added two hits, including a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Putney helped his own cause with a double, four runs scored and two RBIs.

Falconer (0-18, 0-13) turned to Kadan Myers on the mound and he struck out three batters over 4 2/3 innings.

SILVER CREEK — After trailing 6-2, Silver Creek/Forestville found itself only down by a run with the bases loaded and two outs against Division 3 opponent Franklinville.

Caleb Fiegl stepped up to the plate and delivered in a big way, driving home Shawn Kelly and Kam Sakpal with a two-out, two-n single to bring the Black Knights back from the brink of defeat for a 7-6 victory.

Silver Creek/Forestville (10-7, 8-5) was led by Fiegl with two singles and his two RBIs. Aiden Piccolo added two hits and an RBI, and Joe Villafranca collected a pair of hits.

Piccolo pitched the first 6 1/3 innings and John Steinwachs finished the game to earn the win.

Franklinville (6-9, 6-7) was led by Bretton Blecha with a single and a double, and Noah Schenk added three singles. Tyman Farrington started on the mound for the Panthers, but Matt Splitter finished the game and took the loss.

BULLDOGS WALK IT OFF

BROCTON — After watching its early lead slip away, Brocton soon found itself behind Westfield 10-7.

The Bulldogs rallied to tie things at 10-10 in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to a two-out single from Eric Pryll that drove in two runs. Brocton rode that momentum into the eighth inning and after Aiden Gatto worked a leadoff walk he stole his way around the bases before taking home on a passed ball for the 11-10 Division 2 win.

Brocton (7-7, 5-7) was led by Pryll going 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Grant Gustafson went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Gatto was 1 for 4 with the game-winning run.

Kadin Ehmke started on the mound for the Bulldogs and went five innings with eight strikeouts, but Michael Garcia finished the final 1 1/3 innings to earn the win.

Westfield (4-8, 3-8) was powered by Aaron Fuller going 2 for 4, Dan Bratton hit 1 for 4 with two runs and Joel Stein finished 1 for 3 with three runs scored. Stein pitched four innings where he struck out three and gave up six runs, but it was Bratton to take the loss for the Wolverines.

HENRY SHINES IN RELIEF

MAYVILLE — Nate Henry threw four innings of no-hit, shutout relief as Chautauqua Lake rallied for a 7-4 Division 2 win over Pine Valley.

The Thunderbirds (6-9, 6-6) tied the game 4-4 with a three-run fourth inning. Brad Smith led off with a walk and stole second before Nick Webb hit an RBI single and later scored. Brett Meadows added a single and Connor Nowicki reached on a fielder’s choice before scoring the third run of the inning.

In the Chautauqua Lake fifth, Webb tripled to right field with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Meadows.

The Thunderbirds added their final two runs in the sixth. Henry singled and stole second before Nolan Olson hit an RBI double. After Lawson Ormsby walked and Clayton Smith reached on a fielder’s choice, Brad Smith hit an RBI single.

Meadows finished 3 for 4 while Webb and Devin Hewes were both 2 for 4.

Craig Howard hit an RBI single to score Jon Sheldon and George Kruszka followed with an RBI triple in the second inning for the Panthers (5-10, 3-9). Jaiden Miller singled and Trent Ivett hit an RBI single in the third.

JAMESTOWN HAS BIG FIRST INNING

ST. BONAVENTURE — An eight-run first inning propelled Jamestown to a 16-4 five-inning Division 1 win over Olean at St. Bonaventure University.

Dominic Weber led off the game with a double, then, after two outs, Colin Melendez singled before a pair of walks. Later in the frame, Sean O’Brien hit a two-run double and Xavier Foust hit an RBI double.

Brandon Lobb scattered six hits and struck out three while walking five. The Red Raiders (5-13, 5-8) scored three runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth.

Carter Rizzuto had three hits, two RBIs and a run scored; Caleb Piazza had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs; and Weber and O’Brien each had two hits for Jamestown.

The Huskies fell to 5-11 overall and 4-9 in the league.

SENIORS STEP UP

DUNKIRK — Senior Waldemar Morales made a nice catch in left field on the first pitch of the game and also added two hits and two RBIs as Dunkirk beat Falconer 11-6 in Division 1 action on Senior Day at Al Stuhlmiller Field on Saturday.

Brady Corbett had two hits, two RBIs and two stolen bases while pitching the final 1 1/3 innings. Tyler Karin got on base three times and scored the game’s first run. Dylan Bankoski had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Gabe Valentine added an RBI single and Thomas Shaffer, who threw three innings, had Dunkirk’s other hit.

Anthony Cosme pitched the middle 2 2/3 innings, striking out six.
