Calph wins Wednesday Travel League’s 2nd major
WATTSBURG, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League held its second major of the season — the “U.S. Open” — at Scenic Heights Golf Course.
For the second time in league history, there was a five-way tie for the low score in a major. Robert Calph, Al Etzel, Josh Hilliker, Ed Tofil and John Waterman all shot 80. Calph and Hilliker advanced after the first tiebreaker hole with pars. Calph was then declared the overall winner with a par on the second tiebreaker hole. Calph was also the U.S. Open champion in 2019. With the victory, Calph now has won six majors and stands alone at third-most all-time.
Hilliker led the front nine with a 1-under-par 35. Tofil and Waterman led the back nine with 39. In the B Flight, Mike Wolfe won a four-way tiebreaker over Pete Pinkoski, Dave Criscione and Dave Franklin. Ken Kaus and Gary Haase won the C and D flights respectively. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Jaime Galarza.

Closest to the pin were Hilliker (No. 1), McAfee (No. 3), Criscione (No. 14) and Wolfe (No. 18). Winners of the Steeplechase were Waterman (A Flight), Dornan (B), Gawron (C) and Willoughby (D). Winners of the par-3 contest were Etzel (A Flight, +1), Pinkoski (B, +1), Walawender (C, +3), Haase (D, +3).
Top point winners were Wolfe (73, league season-high), Hilliker (54), McAfee (41) and Franklin(36). Season points leaders are 1. Wolfe (205), 2. Franklin (193), 3. Dave Wallace (183), 4. Calph (180), 5. Hilliker (178), 6. Tom Sacilowski (143), 7. Haase(132), 8. Tofil(120), 9. Gawron(119) and 10. Kaus(109). Mike Wolfe moved past Bob Thompson for 10th place on the all-time points list.
