Wednesday Travel League holds second annual Uncle Buck Classic

CHAUTAUQUA — The Wednesday Travel League held a special event this week, the second annual Uncle Buck Classic, honoring the memory of Ed “Butch” Mackowiak, at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course.

Golfers endured a rainy first nine before the skies cleared for a pleasant second nine. The four flight winners, who each received a cherished “Uncle Buck Classic” hat were Al Etzel (A Flight); Jason Habich (B); Mark Mackowiak, Butch’s son (C); and Lou Polichetti (D).

Josh Hilliker and Etzel each shot the low round of 79, with Hilliker the overall winner on the second tiebreaker hole. Hilliker’s victory was a league-best fifth of the season. With a tie for low score, Etzel earned his 60th career win, second-most all-time. Matt Kessler finished third, one stroke behind with 80. Ed Tofil led the front nine with 39, while Hilliker and Kessler led the back nine with 38. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Katie Michalak.

Untied birdies were recorded by A Flight, Kessler (Nos. 2, 3, 17), Tofil (No. 6), Phil Hopkins (No. 10), Hilliker (No. 13), Robert Calph (No. 14) and Dave Criscone (No. 18); B Flight, Mark Orlando (No. 4), Jeff Marsowicz (No. 5), Mick Dunning Sr. (No. 6), Habich (No. 7), Mike Wolfe (Nos. 9, 11, 17), Bryan McCarthy (No. 13) and Lenny Leszkowicz (No. 18); C Flight, Mackowiak (Nos. 4, 17), John Orlando (Nos. 8, 11), Christopher Michalski (No. 9) and Mike Willoughby (No.18); D Flight, Polichetti (No. 1), Graf (No. 5), Michalak (No. 6), Bob Kujawa (No. 8), Jack Hood (No. 12), Brian Lore (No. 13) and Don Kujawa (No. 15).

Closest to the pin were Mark Orlando (No. 4), Tofil (No. 6), Dave Franklin (No. 8), Marsowicz (No. 12), and Etzel (No. 15). Winners of the steeplechase were Joe Michalski (A Flight), Franklin (B), Mike Dornan (C), and Graf (D).

Results of the special two-man best-ball contest were: low front nine, the team of Etzel, Dunning, Tony Destro; and Bob Kujawa; low back nine and low total score, the team of Calph, Marsowicz, Leszkowicz and McCarthy. Winners of the “Uncle Buck Ball” contest (alternating the special ball every hole) was the team of Jeff Nelson, John Waterman, Tom Sacilowski and Polichetti.

Top point winners were Tofil and Mark Orlando (60 apiece), John Orlando (50), and Dunning and Michalak (40 apiece). Season points leaders (through 10 events) are: 1. Dave Wallace (183); 2. Calph (180); 3. Franklin(157); 4. Sacilowski (143); 5.Wolfe(132), 6.Hilliker(124), 7.Tofil(120), 8.Gary Haase(109), 9.Ken Kaus(104), 10. Pete Gawron (96); 11. Marsowicz(84); 12. Pat Weaver (78); 13. Mike Wolfe became the 11th golfer to reach 3,000 career points.
