Tarp Skunks fall to Niagara 9-5; can clinch playoff spot with win tonight

NIAGARA FALLS — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks still haven’t clinched a playoff spot.

The season might all come down to tonight.

Needing one more victory to reach the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League postseason, Jamestown lost to Niagara 9-5 on Thursday at Sal Maglie Stadium.

The Tarp Skunks fell to 22-18 while the Power improved to 22-17. Niagara moved ahead of fourth-place Jamestown for the third spot in the West Division with the win. The Auburn Doubledays are currently fifth with 21 wins, but have two games remaining.

The Power jumped ahead 4-0 in the first inning Thursday against Tarp Skunks starter Kasey Gilman (2-4), a Princeton University product.

Jamestown plated a run in the third inning to make it 4-1. Zack Kent (Wagner College) led off the frame with a walk and eventually scored on an RBI double by Cooper Munro (Drury University).

Niagara made it 6-1 with single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

The Tarp Skunks got back in the game with a three-run top of the seventh. With one out, Jake Kernodle (Princeton University) walked and Kieran Gagnon (Gannon University) singled. Then, with two outs, Drew Garth (Washington & Jefferson College) hit an RBI double and a Gagnon scored on an error. After Vinny Cenname relieved Niagara starter Bryan Aduddle (5-2), Munro hit another RBI double to make it 6-4.

But the comeback didn’t last long for Jamestown as reliever Jason Masick (Wagner College) gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Tarp Skunks’ final run came in the eighth when Grady Mee (Western Michigan University) reached on an error and later scored on a bases-loaded walk to Gagnon.

Cal Brazier and Andrew Stillinger homered for the Power while Vincent Mauro was 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs. Jackson Strong also doubled.

The Tarp Skunks will wrap up their regular season at 6:30 p.m. today against the Power with Fan Appreciation Night at Diethrick Park. Niagara will then travel to Batavia on Saturday for its regular-season finale.

Starting at $3.50/week.
