JAMESTOWN — John Burger didn’t know when, but the manager of the Broomall Newtown, Pennsylvania baseball team felt pretty confident that the boys from suburban Philadelphia would find their way to a Babe Ruth World Series during their teens.

As it’s turned out, it’s in Jamestown.

At Diethrick Park.

Against the best 13-15-year-olds in the country.

“I whole-heartedly, in my heart, believed that the boys on this team, the talent on this team we would be here,” Burger said.

Broomall Newtown advanced to the World Series in a somewhat circuitous way. At states, it lost to Center County, Pennsylvania, in pool play in eight innings, but then came back to down Center County in the championship game.

And at the Mid-Atlantic Regional, Broomall Newtown defeated Beekman, New York, in pool play, but lost to Beekman in the championship game. Ironically, Beekman is also in the World Series field, qualifying as the New York state champion, while Broomall Newtown is in the field as the regional champ.

Burger said the “absolute” strength of his team is its pitching.

“I have 12 kids on the roster and, legitimately, I could pitch 10,” he said.

Offensively, Burger describes his squad as “scrappy,” and aggressive on the basepaths.

“Everybody gets on base, they don’t strike out a lot and, with those four boys (Nick Schmitt, Donny Rieck, Aidin Curran and Sean Grogan), when you’re looking for a gapper, it’s going to get to the fence.”

Broomall Newtown’s first opponent will be host Jamestown. That game is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight.

“This is actually three years in the making,” Burger said, “and we finally did it this year, so it’s amazing.”
