CASSADAGA — The seventh annual KBR Triathlon (kayak, bike, run) was held last Saturday. The lake was full of multi-colored kayaks and one stand-up paddle board, and the field of athletes included many first-time triathletes from New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The race begins with the athletes in their kayaks, and new this year was a category for SUP , and they jockey for position as they race the perimeter of the lower lake. Once they are pulled out of the water by volunteer “kayak pullers,” they race to their bikes to complete a 13-mile, hilly bike loop. Fifty-two runners then headed out on to Dale Drive for a one-mile run along the lake, turned around, and raced back to the finish line, completing the two-mile run portion of the race.

Along with the SUP category this year, there is also an E-bike category. These, along with relay teams, made up of two or three, compete in separate categories.

All participants receive a finisher medal, race T-shirt, and a pancake and sausage breakfast with Southern Tier Brewing Company brews on the side.

This year, the highest-filled age groups were the 60-plus for both the men and the women.
