Panama takes control of D2 West

MAYVILLE — Panama completed a season sweep of Chautauqua Lake and put itself in the driver’s seat for a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West girls volleyball title with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 sweep Wednesday night.

Sarah Harvey led the Panthers (9-1, 7-0) with 12 kills, a block, 11 digs and two aces; Kaitlyn Horton had eight kills and five blocks; Kiera Loberg had 20 assists, 10 digs and two aces; Corinne Hovey had 13 digs and four aces; and Emma Cooper had five kills and five digs.

Panama won the first matchup between the teams 17-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-22 on Sept. 6.

“I thought we played a lot better against them this time. The outcome wasn’t what we wanted, but I think we definitely improved from the first time we played them,” Chautauqua Lake head coach Joanne Meadows said. “There is some stuff we can work on before we meet them hopefully somewhere along the line in playoffs.”

Ava Olson led the Thunderbirds (5-2, 5-2) with 17 digs, five kills, three aces and two assists; Karagan Fairbank had three kills, an ace, 11 digs and 11 assists; Brynn Engdahl had three kills and 15 digs; and Bre Smith had three kills.

RED DRAGONS PREVAIL

Harper Dawes had 12 kills and a block as Maple Grove outlasted Forestville for a 25-15, 23-25, 25-12, 20-25, 15-9 Division 2 West victory.

Hannah Benson had three kills, 13 digs and 15 aces while Hayley Johnson had five kills, two blocks, three digs and four aces for the Red Dragons (2-5, 2-4).

Kaitie Lomanto had two kills, eight assists and six aces; Kaytlynn Franklin had four kills and four aces; Carilene Sliwa had a kill, an assist, six digs and three aces; and Megan Gruber had a kill, an assist, a block and two aces for the Hornets (2-7, 1-6).

GOWANDA SWEEPS

GOWANDA — Elizabeth Green had 11 kills and Jillian Gernatt had 26 assists as Gowanda swept North Collins 25-18, 25-7, 25-18 in the East Division.

Aubrie Heron had eight kills and three aces; Addison Kota had two kills, two assists and eight aces; Holland Browning had six kills and seven digs; and Ella Luther had 21 digs and four aces for the Panthers (8-2, 7-1).

Lily Montaldi had five kills and Zoe Kreinheder had eight assists for the Eagles (3-7, 2-6).

WOLVERINES RALLY

WESTFIELD — After falling behind, Westfield won the final two games to beat Clymer/Sherman 25-18, 20-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-6 in Division 2 West.

Tanleigh Bestine led the Wolverines (7-2, 6-2) with 24 assists, six kills, seven aces and five blocks; Keara Kincaid had 13 kills, nine digs and three aces; and Eva Gnadzinski had five digs, two kills and two aces.

Ericka Heslink had 14 digs and two aces; Alexys Neckers had 13 kills, four digs and four aces; and Janelle Burchanowski had six kills, 13 assists and three aces for the Wolves (5-5, 4-4).

Westfield won the jayvee match.
