Nine inductees to be enshrined into CSHOF on Feb. 19

JAMESTOWN — The Board of Directors of the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame has announced the inductees who will comprise the Class of 2024.

The inductees are Karen Bakewell, Daniel Bryner, Cheryl (Miller) Burns, Tom D’Angelo, Doug Kaltenbach, Rod Maloy, Carlene Sluberski, Karen Tellinghuisen and Judy Young.

These nine individuals will be formally inducted at the CSHOF’s annual induction banquet on Presidents Day, Feb. 19, 2024. Tickets are available by calling Chip Johnson at 716-485-6991.

The Class of 2024 will be the 42nd group inducted into the CSHOF since its inception in 1981. The new honorees will bring the total number of CSHOF inductees to 240.

KAREN BAKEWELL

Dan Bryner

Born 1965; graduate Jamestown High School 1983

Sprinter at JHS and Chautauqua Striders 1981-1983

Silver medalist 1983 Empire State Games 200m and 400m

1986 NCAA Division 1 National Champion 800 meter sprint: set a new meet record 2:00.85

First USA female collegiate runner to break 2:01; 1986 D-1 Track & Field All-American; ranked 10th in the world

Cheryl Burns

1986 Mid-American Conference outdoor track champ in both 400- and 800-meter sprints

1986 Mid-American Conference indoor Track champ for 500 meters

1986 MAC Female Track Athlete of the Year

1984 Mid-American Conference outdoor champ for 400 meters

1984 set Miami University indoor track records for 200-, 300-, 400- and 500-meter races

Tom D'Angelo

1984 set Miami University outdoor track records in 100-, 200- and 400-meter races

1984 Mid-American Conference indoor 400-meter champion

Resides in Fairport, New York; retired information technology specialist

DANIEL BRYNER

Born 1959; graduate Southwestern Central School and BOCES

Doug Kaltenbach

36-year sports career; 29 years in Special Olympics of New York

Competed at local, regional, state, national, international and world events

Participated in 14 different sports; won more than 200 gold, silver and bronze medals

Won one gold and two silver medals at 1995 World Special Olympic Games in roller skating

Silver medalist in softball at 1987 Special Olympics International Games; bronze medalist in aquatics at 1983 Special Olympics International Games

Rod Maloy

Won six golds and one Bronze medal at Special Olympics National Games 1989, 1990, 1991

35 Golds, 64 silvers and 32 bronze medals at New York State Special Olympics 1988-1995

1989 NYS Special Olympics Family of the Year with parents Charles and Helen Bryner

1997 NYS Special Olympics Athlete of the Year

Died 2016; interred Holy Cross Cemetery, Jamestown

CHERYL (MILLER) BURNS

Born 1961; graduate Forestville Central School 1979

Set Forestville basketball records for most points in game, season and career; jersey retired; Section VI Class C basketball champion and Division 3 All-Star 1978-79 season

1994 Buffalo News Runner of the Year; 1997 Western New York’s top-ranked runner 35-39 age group

Multiple record-setting wins in 5K and 10K races in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New York

Six-time qualifier for USA National Triathlon; four-time qualifier for World Triathlon

Third in the women’s 60-64-year-old age group in the sprint triathlon at the 2021 USA Age Group National Championships in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Fourth-place finisher in 2018 World Triathlon Championships held in Australia; Sixth-place finisher in 2022 World Triathlon Championships in Montreal

2023 National Senior Olympic Games silver medalist in triathlon relay

TOM D’ANGELO

Born 1943; graduate Jamestown High School 1961 and Jamestown Community College

Inductee Jamestown Area Bowling Association 2003; served JABA for 20 years as lane representative, board director and board president; classic-level bowler for 35 years; recipient JABA Outstanding Service Award 2001

Baseball umpire 27 years; softball umpire 32 years, football referee 13 years

Inductee Chautauqua County Umpires Hall of Fame 1987

Umpired American Softball Association National Championships in 1984 and 1986

Coached Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball 12 years

Namesake of Jamestown Community College’s Tom D’Angelo Memorial Lady Jayhawk Classic Basketball Tournament and Tom D’Angelo Spirit Award

Died 2007; interred Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Jamestown

DOUG KALTENBACH

Born 1960; graduate Brocton Central School 1978 and SUNY Fredonia

Baseball coach Westfield Academy and Central School for 30 years (1987-2017)

Career record 476-154; third most wins in county history; sixth most in Section VI history

Won 55 consecutive league games (2014-2017)

14 Chautauqua County Athletic Association division titles

13-time CCAA division Coach of the Year

Eight-time Section VI finalist; two Section VI Championships (2015 & 2016)

Far West Regional champs and NYS Finalist in 2015

Post-Journal Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2015

Resides in Fredonia; retired art teacher WACS

ROD MALOY

Born 1958; graduate Panama Central School 1976 and Jamestown Community College

Automobile racer for 36 years (1976-2012)

Raced at Stateline Speedway, Eriez Speedway, Raceway 7 and Little Valley Speedway

Competed in Spectators (1976), Cadets (1977-78), Sportsman (1979-1984), Limited Late Models (1985-89) and Super Late Models (1990-2012)

32 Super Late Model wins; 51 total feature victories

2001 and 2007 Stateline Speedway Super Late Model champion

2001 and 2002 Stateline-Eriez Speedways Circuit Super Late Model champion

2001 and 2007 Stateline Speedway Driver of the Year

Resides in Panama; retired truck driver

CARLENE SLUBERSKI

Born 1991; graduate Fredonia Central School 2009

Fredonia wrestling record: 116-36, 44 pins, against male competition

2008 Section VI 96-pound champion

2009 New York State runner-up at 96 pounds; first female in NYS wrestling history to place at state tourney

2009-2012 wrestled at Northern Michigan University and 2012-2015 at Brock University (Ontario, Canada)

Received Outstanding Athlete Award at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf

Inductee St. Mary’s School for the Deaf Hall of Fame 1998.

Gold medalist in javelin at World Deaf Olympics 1977 in Bucharest, Romania; set US record

Bronze medalist in javelin at World Deaf Olympics 1981 in Cologne, Germany

Six gold medals at 2023 National Senior Games age 95-99 division; set new records in all
