Cortes ignites big third quarter in Silver Creek’s victory

SILVER CREEK — It took a while, but Silver Creek shifted into a high gear in the third quarter en route to a 69-41 nonleague boys basketball victory over Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Wednesday night.

Not surprisingly, it was Ray Cortes who led the 28-4 run, scoring 15 of his game-high 30 points, highlighted by four 3-pointers. He also finished with 12 rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks.

Brady Eick chipped in 13 points; Simon White had seven rebounds and five steals; and Jose Pratts hauled down six boards for the Black Knights (3-1).

For Cattaraugus-Little Valley (0-4), DJ Szata led the way with 12 points and Mason Brewer chipped in 9.

HORNETS FALL

FORESTVILLE — Franklinville used a big fourth quarter to break open a reasonably close game en route to a 67-32 nonleague boys basketball victory over Forestville on Wednesday.

Leading 39-28 after three quarters, the Panthers outscored the Hornets 28-4 in the final eight minutes.

Leading the way for Franklinville was Matthew Spittler, who scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds. Teammate Isaac Towne brought down six boards.

For Forestville, Dominic Anders scored 10 points, and Adam Pokoj and Ethan Ecker had 10 and four rebounds, respectively.

MARKHAM, BAEHR LEAD FALCONER

SHERMAN — Roger Markham and Mathis Baehr both scored in double figures as Falconer topped nonleague Sherman 53-30.

Markham finished with 17 points and Baehr added 13 for the Golden Falcons (2-1), who put the game away with a 17-4 fourth quarter.

Jacob Ferranto led the Wildcats (1-2) with 8 points and nine rebounds.
