Eagles win Byron Bergen Wrestling Tournament

A pair of local powerhouse wrestling programs turned in fine performances over the weekend to kick off their seasons.

The Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer team traveled to Byron-Bergen where it came away with a dominant tournament title, highlighted by four individual championships, while Falconer/Cassadaga Valley recorded an individual title at the Bill Andersen Memorial at Cicero-North Syracuse and a pair of top finishes at the Wellsville Tournament.

BYRON BERGEN TOURNAMENT

Jordan Joslyn (138), John Watson (170), Mason Maring (215) and Walter Lukasiak (285) came home with first-place finishes for the Eagles.

For Joslyn and Watson, the wins were especially meaningful as Joslyn was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the second year in a row, while Watson recorded his 100th career win.

Second-place finishers for the Eagles were Gavin Burchanowski (116) and Jayden Malecki (190), while Alex Bourgeois (108), Thandon Bensink (116) and Sebastian DeJesus (124) placed third.

Junior varsity champions for Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer were Christopher Bowen (116), Tristen Gibbs (152) and Colton Hamilton (160). Noli Paddock (131) placed third, and Connor Moyer (160) and Blaine Rumaihi (170) placed fourth.

ANDERSEN MEMORIAL

Dylan Newman pinned Evan Sheils of Lansing in 43 seconds to claim the 116-pound title for the Golden Cougars. Teammate Evan Newman, wrestling at 108 pounds, lost in the final via pin at 1:21.

In other results, Patrick Braley was pinned in 1:36 in the third-place consolation final at 152 pounds; and Mason Kilmer fell via forfeit in the fifth-place consolation final at 160 pounds.

As a team, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley placed seventh with 113 points. Fairport was first with 183 points.

WELLSVILLE TOURNAMENT

Riley Best (145) claimed the title at 145 pounds via fall, and Thi Quelle VanGuilder placed first at 285 pounds via a 2-0 decision in overtime.

Other place winners for the Golden Cougars were Brayden McCarthy (131) by decision in the third-place consolation final; Javonte Hackett (170) via fall in the fifth-place consolation final; and Noah Booth (170) by forfeit in the seventh-place consolation final.
