The Cassadaga Valley and Fredonia school districts concluded their 7th and 8th grade girls modified basketball season recently, competing against each other in a competition at Fredonia High School.
The Fredonia Hillbillies won the competition, but the teams celebrated something special with all the friends and families that gathered to watch the game. The focus of this final matchup was to work together toward a special cause during the holiday season.
When these two teams matched up earlier in the season, Fredonia coaches Carol Zirkle and Darrell Waag, and Cassadaga Valley coaches Jodi Hoffman and Tammy Rice decided they should collaborate together and have their teams give back to a charity for their final game of their seasons to celebrate together. This would give the two teams a mission to give back to their communities.
The two teams made themed Chinese Auction baskets together and held a raffle to collect money during the final game. At the conclusion of the game, winners collected fun baskets. The best part of the night was donating the money collected to a charitable organization called the "SonShine Fund."
The SonShine Fund is an organization that helps families who are grieving the loss of a child by helping with some of the funeral expenses during a time of heartache. The teams together were able to raise $427 to give to this worthy and meaningful cause. Sportsmanship and teamwork meant a little more to everyone on this special night.
