Fredonia State women win thriller over Brockport

Allie Wandell and Grace Alexander combined to score 37 points as the Fredonia State women’s basketball team defeated Brockport in a thrilling 60-58 victory Tuesday.

Alexander finished with a game-high 19 points and added six rebounds. Wandell went for 18 points and had 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

With the Devils leading by four points, Brockport’s Zoe Zutes nailed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds on the clock to make it a one-point game. The Devils turned the ball over on the ensuing inbound pass, but would eventually regain possession and Caitlin Snyder would draw a foul with 1.1 seconds left. Snyder nailed the first free throw and Brockport was unable to get off a shot at the end.

Early in the game, Mary Culeton converted a basket to put the Devils up 6-4 and they would keep that lead the rest of the way.

The Devils led by as many as 10 points on a couple of occasions. Up 50-40, Brockport scored the final seven points of the third quarter to make it a three-point game, 50-47.

Wandell and Alexander opened with a pair of buckets to start the fourth to put the Devils back up seven, but they never expanded the lead any bigger than that through the end of the game.

Brockport (8-9/4-6 SUNYAC) had three players in double digits led by Zutes with 17. Zairea Hannah added 13 with 20 rebounds. Only five players scored for the Golden Eagles.

Fredonia State came up short against the Cortland State Red Dragons last Friday night. Cortland would defeat the Devils 83-50.

Wandell led the Devils with 12 points. Sarah Seaman added 10 points and three rebounds, and Culeton and Alexander chipped in 7 and 6 points, respectively.

The Red Dragons would use a strong first half scoring 26 points in each of the first and second quarters to build a comfortable 37-point lead after one half.

The Devils would play Cortland even throughout the third quarter with both sides scoring 19, and would manage to outscore the Dragons in the fourth by four. However, the deficit created in the first half would prove to be too much for Fredonia State to overcome.

Logan Streety had a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds for Cortland.

Fredonia State fell at home to Oswego State 70-56 on Saturday.

Wandell would finish the night with 15 points for the Devils, while Alexander would go for 14 points and five rebounds. Culeton added 9 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Oswego State would score the game’s first five points, however, with under two minutes remaining the Devils would manage to tie the game back up at 8. Seaman would convert on a driving layup and hit a 3-pointer for Fredonia State to go up 13-8. The Lakers would score a late bucket to go into the second quarter down 13-10.

The Lakers would recapture the lead midway through the second quarter off of a jumper made by Macey DeOrdio. The Lakers would close the first half holding onto a four-point lead over the Devils.

Throughout the third, the Lakers would outpace Fredonia State, building up an 11-point lead with under one minute remaining in the quarter. Alexander would sink a pair of free throws and would hit a layup off a steal to draw the Devils within seven.

Oswego State would manage to stave off the Devils comeback and would ultimately close out the the fourth up 14 to claim the 70-56 win.

Karleigh Leo and Macey DeOrdio would each score 15 points for the Lakers and Giavanna White-Principio would grab a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Devils (8-8/3-6 SUNYAC) travel to Oneonta and New Paltz this weekend.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Fredonia State men’s basketball team fell 71-52 to Brockport on Tuesday.

Keenan Roberts Jr. was the only Devil in double digits with 11 points.

Brockport jumped out quickly, leading 7-0 in the early going. The Devils would claw back to within a point following a jumper from AJ Judd, making it a 17-16 game.

Two possessions later, trailing 19-18, Brockport scored the next 10 points to go up 29-18. They would close out the half with a 38-24 lead. Brockport kept the lead in double digits the rest of the way.

The Golden Eagles (10-5/6-3 SUNYAC) were led by Jakob Oka with 15 points.

Fredonia State fell to Cortland 70-55 last Friday.

Malik Jemison scored 16 points and Elian Dominguez added 12 points, while also leading the Devils with six rebounds.

The Devils kept it tight through most of the first half, trailing by just five, 29-24, after a jumper by Aiden Proudfoot. Cortland closed the half on an 11-2 run. This put the Red Dragons up 40-26.

They would maintain a double-digit lead until Fredonia State’s Naejon Ward scored on a fast break to pull the Devils within nine, 52-43, with 12:44 left to play.

Later in the half, Roberts Jr. hit a short jumper to make it a 60-55 game with just over six minutes left. Cortland scored the next 10 points while the Devils did not muster a basket the balance of the game.

Cortland was paced by 21 points from Kendall Arcuri and Jaylen Warmack added 14.

Fredonia State fell 83-64 to Oswego on Saturday.

Tyrese Fuller led the Devils with 12 points and added seven rebounds. Roberts Jr. added 11 off the bench and Jemison had 10.

The SUNYAC-leading Lakers took the early lead, but the Devils hung around. They trailed by a single point, 27-26, after back-to-back 3-pointers by David Jordan.

After a jumper by Fuller with 3:20 left in the half, the Devils trailed by just four, 39-35. Oswego would lead 45-37 at the break.

Leading 47-41 early in the second half, the Lakers scored eight straight to build a 14-point lead. They would keep a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Oswego was led by Ahkee Anderson with 23 points, one of four Lakers in double digits. Cartier Bowman had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Devils (5-11/2-7 SUNYAC) travel to Oneonta and New Paltz this weekend.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY

Down 2-0 in the first period, the Fredonia State hockey team scored twice later in the first to tie the game at 2-all.

That score would hold up after a scoreless second, third and overtime en route to a 2-2 tie Saturday.

Johnny Malandruccolo continued his hot streak on offense, scoring the equalizer in the final minute of the first period. It was Malandruccolo’s fifth goal of the year, and fifth point in the last five games.

Fredonia State’s other goal came off the stick of Ethan Pitzman at the 16:55 mark. Johnny Aonso assisted on both scores. Jake Murphy added an assist on the Pitzman score.

From there, the Devils rode the hot goaltending of Logan Dyck, who made 40 saves and earned the game’s first star.

Cortland (10-5-2/6-2-1 SUNYAC) scored 1:03 into the game when Anthony Bernardo went over Dyck’s left shoulder. Johnny Facchini put the Red Dragons up 2-0 at 11:02.

Ronan Mobley was credited with 21 saves for Cortland.

The Devils held Cortland to 0 for 3 on power plays, including a five-on-three opportunity.

The Oswego Lakers defeated Fredonia State 5-0 on Friday. Cal Schell earned the shutout for the Lakers with 26 saves.

The Devils received 21 saves from starting goalie Charles-Anthony Barbeau, who surrendered all five scores. Zach Willms saw his first action of the season, finishing the last 10:15 of the game, making eight saves without allowing a goal.

The Lakers got goals from five different players. Connor Sleeth and Tristan Francis both had a goal and an assist. Brock Kulicki, Shane Bull and Connor Gatto also scored.

Both teams were 0 for 3 on power plays. The Devils had a five-on-three opportunity, but would not score.

The Devils (4-12-1/3-8-1 SUNYAC) are back in action in Steele Hall next Friday when they take on Chatham at 7 p.m.
