WESTFIELD — Sometime over the past week, a friend of Carson Swanson’s told the Westfield junior that he was closing in on the school’s all-time scoring mark.

Carson’s parents thought it was a secret.

Whether he knew about it or not, Carson was going to break the record.

It was just a matter of when.

The milestone came Monday night as the star guard scored 32 points in a 64-55 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West victory over Panama at Westfield Academy & Central School.

“I don’t think my parents knew that I knew,” Carson said postgame. ” … I didn’t really think of it going into tonight.”

Swanson entered the night with 1,403 points — 11 shy of Michael Bova’s school record of 1,414 set in 2011.

He set the record with a bucket late in the second quarter that gave the Wolverines a 31-20 lead, but Panama stayed in it with an 8-1 run over the final couple of minutes of the first half.

“It’s just a kid who loves it and a kid who has solid teammates,” said Westfield head coach Nolan Swanson, Carson’s father. “It’s become his all-time passion. I can’t remember the last time he set a ball down.”

After halftime, Westfield (13-1, 7-0) and its leading scorer put the Panthers (9-2, 4-2) away.

A 5-0 run early in the third quarter turned into an 8-0 run when Swanson was fouled and a Panama player was whistled for a technical foul on the same play. Swanson knocked down three of the four ensuing free throws and the Wolverines opened up a 10-point lead.

The lead grew to 14 before the Panthers’ Brandon Keefe hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter.

Westfield continued to lead by double digits as Chris Vacanti hit his fourth 3-pointer of the night with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

“He’s 6-foot-5 and I get yelled at for having him on the perimeter all the time,” Nolan said of Vacanti. ” … I had two choices: put him out there where he buries 3s and let him play his game or try to force him into something he’s not as good at.”

“It really spaces the floor really well,” Carson added. “With other guys knocking down shots, they can’t play certain defenses.”

Carter Brink — who led Panama with 29 points on the night — answered with a 3-pointer, but the Wolverines’ Aaron Fuller scored at the other end. The Panthers’ Jordan Mescall then sank three free throws after getting fouled, but Swanson answered that with a 3-pointer to keep Panama at bay.

“It didn’t really come very easily, but he got dribble penetration and made some tough ones,” Nolan said of his son. “That’s such a good game against such a good team.”

Brink drained another 3-pointer for the Panthers to make it 58-48, but Swanson and Zach Maguire scored the next six points for Westfield to effectively put the game away.

“They had some complementary scorers, especially in the first three quarters, but when the game was tight, Carson put the ball in his hands and did a great job of finishing through contact,” Panama head coach Ed Nelson said. “He can score at all levels like any good player can.”

Panama struggled to figure out the Wolverines’ 2-3 zone for the better part of the night, which led to the Panthers shooting 20 of 53 from the field, including 6 of 23 from 3-point range.

“Credit to Westfield. Their zone is tough. They have some big kids on the bottom of that zone and they play really aggressively up top,” Nelson said. ” … They make it tough for sure.”

Westfield, which entered the week as the New York State Sportswriters Association’s second-ranked Class C team, will visit Clymer on Thursday. Panama, ranked No. 6 in Class C, will visit Frewsburg that night.

“There are some really solid Class C teams. Randolph, Frewsburg with Gavin Smith, Class C is loaded with a lot of talent. It’s going to be a heck of a playoff,” said Nelson, whose Panthers will need help to have any shot at a league title. “We just have to keep getting better every day to hopefully have the same result as last year.”

NOTES: Vacanti had 12 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots; Fuller had 10 points and 12 rebounds; and Swanson had eight assists and four rebounds for Westfield. … Alex Barmore had 10 rebounds for Panama. … Panama turned the ball over 13 times, while Westfield turned it over 11. … The Wolverines shot 23 of 55 from the field, including 7 of 24 from 3-point range. … Westfield won the jayvee game 43-40. Grant Beadle led the Wolverines with 11 points and Johnny Abers led the Panthers with 16.
