HOUGHTON — The senior indoor track and field season will continue for Falconer/Frewsburg/Randolph/Maple Grove’s Talon Rowland after a first-place finish at the Section VI New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championship Qualifier in the 300-meter race at the Kerr-Pegula Field House at Houghton College on Saturday.

Rowland posted a time of 35.43 for the Section VI championship and his spot at the state meet next month. Finishing right behind him was Williamsville South sophomore Auralleus Hicks at 35.95 and Jamestown’s Jarren Cotter in 36.62, both reaching the state standard time of 36.75 to book a ticket to Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

Rowland was the only local first-place finisher, but he didn’t stop with that, reaching fourth place in the long jump after going a distance of 20-feet, 8-inches. Jamestown’s Noah Burch also cracked the top ten in the long jump with a distance of 20-feet.

Another finish atop the podium came as a team with the Dunkirk/Silver Creek quartet of Michael Hanlon, Nathan Carlson, Johnee Thomas and Lucas Lawrie winning the 1,600-meter relay. The foursome posted a time of 3:28.83, ahead of second-place Jamestown’s 3:36.58 and clearing the state standard of 3:32.44 with ease.

Cody Kent grabbed second place for Falconer/Frewsburg/Randolph/Maple Grove in the 3,200 meters at a time of 9:49.49, missing the state standard of 9:42.24 and falling short of Holland/East Aurora’s Owen Rung in first at 9:28.45. Kent’s teammate Sean Verbosky finished sixth at a pace of 10:17.38.

A trio of local athletes finished in the top 10 of the 1,600 meters with Jamestown’s Stephen Hallberg taking fourth at 4:41.62. Hallberg was followed up by Falconer/Frewsburg/Randolph/Maple Grove teammates Juvenal Diaz-Cortes in fifth at 4:42.02 and Ethan Verbosky in seventh at 4:43.90. The first place time came from Lancaster’s Carson Zuba at 4:32.91.

In the 600 meters, Salamanca’s Jesse Hill claimed fifth at 1:28.81, while Jamestown’s Isaiah Sanchez was ninth at 1:31.59.

Falconer/Frewsburg/Randolph/Maple Grove’s Zayne Cline had a pair of top five finishes, one on the track and another on the field. Cline came fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.38, while first place was Lackawanna’s Julius Arias at 8.08.

Cline then was fifth in high jump at a height of 5-feet, 8-inches, just behind teammate Gavin Stearns in fourth place at a height of 5-feet, 10-inches.

Falconer/Frewsburg/Randolph/Maple Grove’s Charles Sundquist made the top 10 in the weight throw with a distance of 52-feet, 10.75-inches, which was good for sixth place.

GIRLS

HERMAN HEADS TO STATES

Franklinville senior Tyyetta Herman qualified for states in two events, the 55-meter dash and the 300 meters. Herman finished second in the 300 with a time of 41.59 and third in the 55 at 7.35, but booked her trip to states outdoing the state standard times of 41.94 and 7.44, respectively.

Jamestown’s Belle Johnson cracked the top five in the 600 meters, running a time of 1:39.55 and just behind her in fifth place was Falconer/Frewsburg/Randolph/Maple Grove’s Hannah Madonia 1:44.89.

Dunkirk/Silver Creek’s Leah Mays was fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:58.20, just ahead of Jamestown’s London Hamilton at 5:03.26.

In the field, Jamestown’s Emily Cardinale took fourth in the pole vault, reaching a height of 9-feet, 6-inches.

Fredonia/Westfield’s Mariella Russo was fifth in the high jump at a height of 5-feet, 3-inches and Salamanca’s Isabella Milks finished eighth with a height of 4-feet, 10-inches.

Also cracking the top ten are Jamestown’s Javiana Matos in weight throw with a distance of 35-feet, 6.75-inches for sixth, Fredonia/Westfield’s Callie Draggett in shot put with a distance of 29-feet, 6.75-inches for eighth, and Jamestown’s Myah Crossley in long jump with a distance of 15-feet, 11.75-inches for ninth.
