First-liner Ryan Bailey got things started 57 seconds into the game with his fourth goal of the year, and linemates Johnny Malandruccolo and Antoine St. Onge assisted defenseman Cam Birkeland on the second goal, as the Fredonia State men’s hockey team rolled to a 5-1 victory over SUNY Morrisville at the annual Pink the Rink game at Steele Hall Arena.

Malandruccolo, Bailey and St. Onge are the top three point-getters for the Devils this season and each contributed a point in the victory.

Freshman Nolan Underwood scored his first career goal and later added an assist. David Sudbrink and Kurri Woodford added third-period goals to back the 32-save effort of netminder Logan Dyck.

Bailey’s goal would be the only score of the first period. Birkeland added his 1:46 into the second period and just under five minutes later Underwood made it a 3-0 game.

Clark Cameron got the Mustangs on the board 13:20 into the second to keep things close, making it a 3-1 game. It was the first goal the Blue Devils gave up in over six periods of play.

Garrett Boyonoski had 27 saves for Morrisville, while surrendering all five scores.

The Devils improve to 4-7-1 in the conference and 6-14-1 overall. Morrisville falls to 2-10-1 in the SUNYAC and 4-16-1 overall. The Devils proved to have Morrisville’s number, having beat them 5-3 earlier in the year.

Pink the Rink, established in 2008, has raised over $114,00 for the American Cancer Society, as well as becoming a major event on campus. Following the game, the pink jerseys were given out to those who had a jersey sponsored in their name.

The Devils are at home next weekend with games against Geneseo and Brockport.

BLUE DEVILS POST SHUTOUT ON FRIDAY

Fredonia State’s Charles-Anthony Barbeau made 31 saves in earning his second shutout of the season, as the Blue Devils downed Post University 3-0 on Friday night at Steele Hall Arena.

Ethan Pitzman scored the game’s first goal. He finished off a scrum in front of the net, taking a rebound from a David Sudbrink shot and hammering it home. Cam Birkeland had the second assist. It was a power play score and Pitzman’s second goal of the season.

Charles-Anthony Barbeau made eight saves for a clean first period as the Devils took the 1-0 lead into the intermission.

In the second period, Santoro scored his third goal of the season on a one timer from the point on a pass from Brendan Dempsey.

Ryan Bailey made it 3-0 when he dangled past Post goaltender Drew Blodgett on a breakaway. Johnny Malandruccolo assisted. The second frame ended with the Devils up, 3-0.

Barbeau’s 31 saves earned him the game’s First Star. The Devils held a 32-31 advantage in shots on goal.

The Devils were 1-4 on power plays, while Post was scoreless on their four power play attempts.

Blodgett finished the game with 29 saves for the Eagles, giving up three scores.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

FREDONIA STATE TAKES DOWN BUFFALO STATE

The Fredonia State women’s basketball earned the season sweep against Buffalo State routing the Bengals 63-46 on Saturday. The Devils never trailed in this game and shot a scorching 5 of 6 from three to take an early 18-point lead going into the second quarter and would never look back.

Allie Wandell and Caitlin Snyder would anchor the Devils offense with Wandell scoring 11 points and Snyder with 10. Wandell would also finish the night with a team-high seven rebounds and four assists.

The Devils would get contributions on offense from multiple players with nine players scoring, shooting 46% from the field. The Devils would dominate the paint scoring 34 points inside, and 24 points off of turnovers.

Buffalo State was led by Adiya Jones with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Maddy Stearns and Carly Atty would score 9 points each.

BLUE DEVILS EDGED BY SUNY ONEONTA

A pair of three pointers in the final 40 seconds pulled the Fredonia State women’s basketball team to within two points. After a pair of missed free throws by Oneonta, the Devils regained possession to put them into position to tie or win with another three, but they could not convert, falling 50-48 against the Red Dragons on Tuesday.

Trailing 50-42, Mary Culeton nailed a three, followed by an Oneonta turnover. Grace Alexander connected on a three pointer on the next possession. The Devils then got the ball back after a pair of missed free throws, but failed to convert a pair of shots as time expired.

Alexander scored a game-high 24 points. None of the seven other Blue Devils that scored had more than five points in the deliberate, slow-paced game. Oneonta was led by Jenna Haclerode with 22 points and nine rebounds, and Molly Stephens had 14 points.

The first half was tightly contested, with the Devils taking a 30-26 lead into the intermission. The end of the third saw the two teams deadlocked at 37.

Oneonta opened the fourth with the first nine points, forcing the Devils to play catch-up the rest of the quarter.

The Devils had won their previous two SUNYAC games, before the two-point loss. The Devils have improved their play the past few weeks, and are challenging for a postseason berth with four conference contests remaining. They stand at 5-9 in the SUNYAC, and 10-11 overall.

Oneonta improves to 8-17 and 10-12.

The Devils are back home this weekend, playing host to Potsdam and Plattsburgh in Dods Hall as part of women’s/men’s doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BLUE DEVILS DOWN BUFFALO STATE

The Fredonia State men’s basketball team overcame a slow first start to earn the come-from-behind victory against Buffalo State on Saturday. The Devils would only manage to score 19 points in the first half and would score 38 in the second half to beat the Bengals by a final score of 57-52.

Elian Dominguez and Keenan Roberts Jr. led the Devils in scoring with Dominguez scoring a career best 16 points and Roberts with 15 points. Dominguez would shoot 7-10 from the field and Roberts would miss only one shot on the night.

Buffalo State was paced by Maley McCurty who would score 15 points and snag seven rebounds. Nigel Burch would add 12 points and seven rebounds as well.

The Devils would recapture the lead off of a Roberts’ three pointer at the 13-minute mark, but a pair of made free throws from Buffalo State’s Burch would draw the Bengals within one point with under a minute remaining in regulation. A driving layup from Dominguez would put the Devils up by three and after a Buffalo State miss on the other end Roberts would put the game away at the line sinking both free throws to give the Devils the five-point victory.

ONEONTA TOO MUCH FOR FREDONIA STATE

The Fredonia State men’s basketball team fell 66-59 to Oneonta in Dods Hall on Tuesday. The Devils led 43-41 five minutes into the second half when an 11-point run put Oneonta up for good. The Devils would close the gap to four points, but could not get over the hump.

Malik Jemison and Elian Dominguez led the Devils with 14 points apiece. Oneonta was led by Pete Laidley with 16 points off the bench and Caleb Brown added 11 points.

The first half saw eight lead changes before Oneonta settled on a 35-28 lead at the half. Seven straight points to open the second half by Fredonia State tied the game at 35-all. The game would go back and forth several times, before the Dragons made their 11-0 run.

Oneonta improves to 11-12 overall and 8-7 in the conference.

The Devils (6-16 / 3-11 SUNYAC) are back home this weekend, playing host to Potsdam and Plattsburgh in Dods Hall as part of women’s/men’s doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
