Lockport edges Eagles in Section VI girls duals
In matches wrestled, the Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama girls had the edge over Lockport, but three forfeits proved enough as Lockport won 33-29 and claimed the Section VI Dual Invitational Championships at Dunkirk High School on Saturday.
Lockport opened the tournament with a 46-30 defeat at the hands of Niagara Wheatfield, but four straight victories over Fredonia 42-19, Dunkirk 34-21, Sweet Home 45-30 and the Eagles in the final round gave the Lions the title with a 4-1 record and head-to-head tiebreaker over Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama.
Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama dominated its first four matches defeating Dunkirk 54-15, Sweet Home 42-28, Fredonia 48-15 and Niagara Wheatfield 36-33. The Eagles were highlighted by Noli Paddock going 5-0 with four pins, Sophia Gervasio went 5-0 with three pins and a 6-4 sudden victory decision over Lockport’s Bella Andes and Madison Szymanowski went 5-0 with a pair of pins.
Kristina Dickey and Lillian Hyde were nearly perfect for Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama, securing pins in their first four matches, but suffered defeats to Lockport to go 4-1.
Fredonia came in third place, earning the tiebreaker over Niagara Wheatfield 36-30 in the fifth round. The Hillbillies had strong performances from Meyah Aponte going 4-1 with a pair of pins, McKella Hodkin went 4-1 with two pins and a technical fall, Bryleigh Wicks and Makayla Jimerson also went 4-1.
Evelyn Cuthbert went 3-2, but secured three pins in victory and Rosaliz Aponte finished 3-2.
Dunkirk edged Sweet Home in the fifth-place match 60-42.
Zoamy Mendez-Aquino led the Marauders going 4-1 and had a pair of pins, while Sheila Vega, Anahi Diaz and Lluvia Diaz went 3-2.
