Frewsburg and Clymer remain the No. 2 teams in their respective classes in the New York State Sportswriters Association's girls basketball rankings this week.
The Bears are the second-ranked team in Class C after beating Falconer and Portville last week. Frewsburg then beat Gowanda on Monday night and will host Cassadaga Valley on Thursday.
The Pirates kept their No. 2 rankings in Class D after tight wins against Sherman and Panama last week. Clymer then beat Maple Grove on Monday night and will host Westfield on Thursday before visiting the Wolverines on Saturday afternoon.
Randolph is No. 5 in Class C after beating Portville and Cassadaga Valley last week. The Cardinals then topped Falconer on Monday night and will visit Gowanda on Thursday.
Westfield is No. 15 in Class C after beating Silver Creek last week. The Wolverines topped Chautauqua Lake on Monday night and will battle Clymer twice this week.
Cassadaga Valley is No. 25 in Class C after beating Gowanda twice last week, but also losing to Randolph. The Cougars then lost to Portville on Monday night and will visit Frewsburg on Thursday.
Sherman is No. 4 in Class D after losing to Clymer and beating Chautauqua Lake last week. The Wildcats, lost to Panama on Monday night, will host Silver Creek on Saturday afternoon.
Southwestern is up to its highest ranking of the season at No. 17 in Class B. The Trojans coasted to wins over Dunkirk, Olean and Fredonia last week before beating the Hillbillies again Monday night. Southwestern will visit Allegany-Limestone on Thursday.
Salamanca is No. 23 in Class B after beating Olean and Allegany-Limestone last week. The Warriors, who topped Dunkirk on Monday, will host Fredonia tonight and the Marauders on Saturday afternoon.
Portville is No. 20 in Class B and Wilson is No. 21. In Class AAA, Cardinal O'Hara is No. 4 and Lancaster is No. 13. Starpoint is No. 5 in Class AA, St. Mary's is No. 9, Clarence is No. 18 and Nichols is No. 20. Lewiston-Porter is No. 5 in Class A, Pioneer is No. 8, Iroquois is No. 9, Williamsville South is No. 18 and Depew is No. 25.
The top-ranked girls teams in the state are: Long Island Lutheran (Class AAA), Averill Park (Class AA), Dalton School (Class A), Hornell (Class B), Greenwich (Class C) and Edmeston/Morris (Class D).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Westfield retained the No. 1 spot in Class C with late-week wins over Brocton and Buffalo Science last week. The Wolverines were upset by Chautauqua Lake on Tuesday night and will visit Sherman on Friday.
Randolph, which recently fell to No. 16, moved back up to No. 11 in Class C with wins over Cassadaga Valley, Gowanda and Falconer before a loss to Salamanca last week. The Cardinals beat Frewsburg on Tuesday night and have a week off before traveling to Gowanda for their regular-season finale.
Panama is No. 14 in Class C after beating Maple Grove, Brocton and Sherman last week. The Panthers, whose only two losses are to No. 1 Westfield, beat Clymer on Tuesday and will host Brocton on Friday.
Maple Grove remains an honorable-mention choice in Class C despite losing to Panama last week. The Red Dragons beat Sherman on Tuesday and will host Chautauqua Lake on Friday.
Salamanca remained No. 5 in Class B after wins over Olean, Allegany-Limestone and Randolph last week. The Warriors then beat Dunkirk on Tuesday night and will visit No. 20 Fredonia on Friday.
The Hillbillies dropped five spots from No. 15 after losing to Allegany-Limestone in overtime and beat Dunkirk last week. Fredonia then beat Southwestern on Tuesday night ahead of Friday's matchup with Salamanca.
Newfane is No. 4 in Class B, while Akron, East Aurora, Eden and Middle Early College are honorable-mention choices.
Jamestown, which beat Clarence, Frontier and St. Francis last week, moved up a spot to No. 16 in the Class AA rankings. The Red & Green topped Williamsville North on Tuesday night and will visit Orchard Park on Friday.
In Class AA, Canisius is No. 7, Timon-St. Jude is No. 11, Health Sciences is No. 15, Nichols is No. 18 and St. Joe's is No. 19. Frontier and Orchard Park are honorable-mention selections.
Amherst is No. 9 in Class A, while Lackawanna is No. 27. Cheektowaga, Grand Island and Pioneer are honorable-mention selections.
Holland is an honorable-mention choice in Class C.
In addition to Westfield, top-ranked teams in the state are Long Island Lutheran (Class AAA), Greece Athena (Class AA), East (Class A), Marcellus (Class B) and Sackets Harbor (Class D).
